Joanne,
For some reason there is a 'scratchiness' under your voice. It's not in the silence spaces. There are a few things you can try in order to improve things for future recordings.

You may want to check their microphone's settings (usually in the System's Control Panel for sounds and microphones), and if there is any noise-cancelling, de-activate it. Noise Reduction in Audacity may lend itself to better results.

Another thing is to clean the jack/usb port that your microphone is plunged into. Gently blow so that any dust comes out.

If these things don't work then it might be that the hardware is just old and the sound card can only do so much.

Thanks much for your review and comments. I've trimmed the opening and ending and reposted here:

The scratchiness is actually echo, which I think I have solved in future recordings by moving the setup to a small closet. Also, every once in a while the fan on my laptop kicks on, and I don't always hear it through the headphones. I've tried to re-record when that happens, but I may not have caught all of them.

Again, thanks much for your comments. I'm working on sections 8 and 9 now. (And I don't know why the address doesn't show up as a hot link.)

Remember there are 3 stumbles to be edited out as well.

I hope you are right. It really doesn't sound like an echo to me. :hmm:

I've re-recorded those sections and reposted:

https://librivox.org/uploads/m8b1/stateoftheunion_1897_1900_07_various_128kb.mp3.

You can really tell the difference in the setup now--there is little or no scratch/echo under my voice (at least that I can hear). If you think the contrast in tone and quality is too jarring, just say the word and I'll re-record the entire section--not a problem and good practice for this newbie in many respects.

Thanks again,

Joanne

The new setup sounds great! Section 7 is PL OK. I'm glad you recorded those bits so I could hear your setup but in the future little stumbles like that can be edited out. If you are on Audacity use the magnifying glass to zoom in on the area and then you can cut out the little blip.

Once a section is PL OK we don't generally like you to record again. I do want you to be happy with your contribution so if you want to record it again, then I'm willing to PL again.

Joanne,
It sounds so much better!

1:12 repeat - In the early part of April last, pursuant to a request made at the instance of the Secretary of State by the British ambassador at this capital,

5:05 missing text - This was simply but impressively accomplished on the 12th of August last by the delivery of a certified copy of the resolution to President Dole, who thereupon yielded up to the representative of the Government of the United States the sovereignty and public property of the Hawaiian Islands.

17:00 missing text - The proposal of the Czar for a general reduction of the vast military establishments that weigh so heavily upon many peoples in time of peace was communicated to this Government with an earnest invitation to be represented in the conference which it is contemplated to assemble with a view to discussing the means of accomplishing so desirable a result.

Only two corrections.

17:25 stumble - I directed that upon the guaranty of a minimum bid which should give the Government the principal of its debt the sale should proceed.

30:53 – word change - At the close of the year thirty forest reservations, not including those of the Afognak Forest and the Fish-Culture Reserve, in Alaska, had been created by Executive proclamations under section 24 of the act of March 3, 1891, embracing an estimated area of 40,719,474 acres.

Excellent edits. Both sections are spot check PL OK. Thank you for your help with this project. :D
