Personal narratives of climbing Mount Everest in 1922-1923. The expeditions did not reach the summit.

The northern approach to the mountain was discovered by George Mallory and Guy Bullock on the initial 1921 British Reconnaissance Expedition. It was an exploratory expedition not equipped for a serious attempt to climb the mountain. With Mallory leading (and thus becoming the first European to set foot on Everest's flanks) they climbed the North Col to an altitude of 7,005 metres (22,982 ft). From there, Mallory espied a route to the top, but the party was unprepared for the great task of climbing any further and descended. The British returned for a 1922 expedition. George Finch climbed using oxygen for the first time. He ascended at a remarkable speed—290 metres (951 ft) per hour, and reached an altitude of 8,320 m (27,300 ft), the first time a human reported to climb higher than 8,000 m. Mallory and Col. Felix Norton made a second unsuccessful attempt. Mallory was faulted for leading a group down from the North Col which got caught in an avalanche. Mallory was pulled down too but survived. Seven native porters were killed. ( Wikipedia - to be changed before cataloging)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/61083
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Could I read sections 8, 9 please?

Since these are all different authors, and Mallory died in 1924, this should be okay, even though I live in a death+70 country.
Right?
Cheers, Ava.

Right?

That is a good question. Tricia gave this project up, after setting it up, because some authors' death dates are too recent for her. But, the book was published in 1922, and Mallory did die in 1924, so I would think that it is OK for you to read those sections. I will put you down for those sections (thank you!), but maybe we should discuss this in the backroom with the other admins? That is, if you think we should get other opinions.

Thank you for changing that! I was trying to remember how to do it, but had not gotten very far with it. Of course, leaving you as the original poster and confusing people would have been interesting! :D

My 2¢ - Both the editor (d 1939) of the book and Mallory (d 1024) are PD everywhere based on 70 years after author date of death so I see no reason not to have non-U.S. readers for Mallory's chapters. These single chapters written by Mallory would be fine to read and submit to the short nonfiction collections, so why not as part of this project? Also by my calculations, Finch (d 1970) and Longstaff (d 1964) should also be OK for Canadians based on 50 years after author date of death.

Thank you, Jo! I agree with your 2 pennies, and I am glad that my assumption was correct. This is, essentially, a collection of essays that happened to be collected and printed in 1922. The death dates are the only thing that would prevent a non-US reader from reading the essays of those authors who were lucky enough to live a long life, but it does not prevent them from reading those authors who died more than 70 years ago. So, Ava is good to go!

And, we are moving on to Readers Wanted!

ETA: The red warnings for Finch and Longstaff have been adjusted, the Canadian part of the warning has been removed.
