And Ch 37 is PL OK (your timing was perfect).

Funnily enough, am reading a book solo by Isabella L Bird (an indefatigable British traveller, convinced of the superiority f the British in all things, but a very intresting writer) who has this to say: "The Americans have introduced the villanous custom of shaking hands at these receptions..." I think it may be in reference to the occasion (observing an Hawaiian king at a reception for his people) rather than the custom itself. So many dfferent viewpoints! Still wondering how you shake fingers without touching palms...

thank you to both of you!
maybe like kissing left and right without faces touching or like kissing the back ofthe hand without lipstouching?
so no contact at all but maybe fingertips?

PL OK!

I was distressed, however, to hear nothing about a dowry.

Really? Were you thinking of having some nuptials of your own which might involve one?

A good argument for a fat bride, I imagine.

Heft was once considered a measure of good health. And, of course, one wanted a healthy bride.
