The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner by James Hogg (1770 - 1835) .

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-private-memoirs-and-confessions-of-a-justified-sinner-by-james-hogg-2/

An early example of a psychological mystery and modern crime fiction, The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner details the experience of its criminal anti-hero. It is set in Scotland within a world where angels, devils, and demonic pssession exist. The book was a response against the antinomian society, or a society that does not believe in laws or moral norms (in a Christian sense one believes that they do not have to follow the Ten Commandments because of the principle of salvation by divine forgiveness), that was growing on the borders of Scotland at the time. 1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2276
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Elsie,

I can MC this for you.

MW is set up.

I edited the first post a little: removed the part about id3 tags and shortened the suggested file name.

This one doesn't have traditional chapters so you are going to have to decide on to call the 17 pieces, possibly "section" or "part", then edit the phrases in the first post for the beginning and ending of each recording.

All yours!
Thanks very much.
I am sending you this unfinished recording of Section 9, as I am currently having difficulty with the audio quality, and was wondering if you could advise me what to do. I have used background noise reduction and amplified it, but my voice sounds strange. Please can you advise me about this?
Please review audio recording at the following link: https://librivox.org/uploads/dlolso21/memoirsjustifiedsinner_09_hogg_128kb.mp3
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Kind regards,
Chad

I was not able to listen to the whole thing as I’m about to go to bed, but perhaps you may have over used the noise reduction function (used too high of a setting) because that can distort the sound of your voice. This has happened to me before when I had spoken softly with the loud airconditioning of my room in the background.

You could try using a lower noise reduction
setting. A slight background buzz is not the end of the world - especially if noise reduction causes a noticeable difference in your voice’s sound quality.

Your recording doesn’t actually sound that bad to me and I would totally accept it if you find you might have to rerecord to fix the issue and don’t want to rerecord.

Perhaps David, our MC, might have better advice as he is more experienced than I :D

Elsie,

I agree with everything that you pointed out.

The only thing I would add is that if you are having troubles you could send a raw one-minute sample and a it’s noise cleaned version through as a one-minute test and one of our expert listeners there might be able to offer an a judgment to your noise cleaning settings.

Hey Chad,

Did you decide to rerecord section 9 or do you want me to PL the one you submitted?

Thank you for your message. I had another listen to the audio recording, reduced the amplitude and edited out any repetition.
Here is Section 9 ready for PLing: https://librivox.org/uploads/dlolso21/memoirsjustifiedsinner_09_hogg_128kb.mp3 Time: 24:11
