From Ritual to Romance by Jessie Laidlay Weston (1850 - 1928).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/from-ritual-to-romance-by-jessie-laidlay-weston/
From Ritual to Romance is a 1920 book written by Jessie L. Weston.
Weston's book is an examination of the roots of the King Arthur legends and seeks to make connections between the early pagan elements and the later Christian influences. The book's main focus is on the Holy Grail tradition and its influence, particularly the Wasteland motif.
The origins of Weston's book are in James George Frazer's seminal work on folklore, magic and religion, The Golden Bough (1890), and in the works of Jane Ellen Harrison. The work is mentioned by T. S. Eliot in the notes to his poem, The Waste Land. ( Wikipedia. Will update/change before cataloguing)
This is an abandoned solo, re-opened as a group project.

Many of these chapters have portions of German and/or French, and a bit of Latin. (And apparently some old French/old German as well.) Many of these portions are quite lengthy, so I'd like them as fluent as possible. If you are interested in a chapter, but not familiar with these languages, Sonia (kitty) has kindly offered to record these portions for you, either for you to imitate if you feel comfortable with that, or to insert into your final recording. Thanks, Sonia!

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4090
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Yes, I know I've already got one solo project going, but I've been speeding up my turn around time and want to launch into this one as soon as possible.

Hi

I would be glad to DPL this project. I studied medieval languages at the University (decades ago!), and read this text more than once.

Hi Devorah

I already had a look at this project myself, because I I was tickled by the challenge of the Old French and German poems in there, but the chapters were way too long for me to consider doing myself.

I can however offer to record the poems for anybody who wants to have a sample on how to pronounce things. :) I speak both German and French, and the old French is quite familiar to me as I studied it at university. Old German is even easier.

The offer stands, just post in here, I'll keep it on my watchlist. Or PM me if you need help.

Sonia
I will be on vacation from Wednesday 27 March till Sunday 14 April
and unable to PL during that time. Thank you for your patience.

Oh wow, it's old French??? I thought some of it looked kind of like French, but not quite. Maybe that's what I was seeing? Thanks for the offer! :D

EDIT: Would you be willing to have your recording inserted into someone else's chapter? Maybe with a voice credit at the beginning of the chapter: "French and German portions read by Sonia"? I, for one, wouldn't want to try to copy someone else's pronunciation for a long segment like that, although I don't mind it for a phrase or sentence.
