The Topaz Story Book: Stories and Legends of Autumn, Hallowe'en, and Thanksgiving by Ada M. and Eleanor L. Skinner, Eds..

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/the-topaz-story-book-by-ada-m-skinner/

From the Introduction: "Nature stories, legends, and poems appeal to the young reader’s interest in various ways. Some of them suggest or reveal certain facts which stimulate a spirit of investigation and attract the child’s attention to the beauty and mystery of the world. Others serve an excellent purpose by quickening his sense of humour."

This is a charming collection of stories, legends, and poems about autumn harvest, Halloween, and Thanksgiving translated from the Danish, French, German, and others. There are animal stories and poems by some very famous authors and poets. All in all, this is a wonderful book for young people, and older people as well. "When the Frost is on the Pumpkin ..." ( Nan Dodge, with a portion of the book introduction added)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/51734
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Nan,

I will MC this for you. Be back shortly to add the MW.

Edited to add:

MW added. Did you plan to have the introduction recorded? If not, let me know and I can renumber the sections to remove the "0" section.

Please note that I shortened the filenames and edited the text for the intro a little.

Let me know if you have any questions. I will leave the thread here in the Launch Pad for a couple of days to see if we get a DPL to volunteer. :)

Hi Jo -- the introduction isn't very much fun. I would leave it out, since most of it is thanks to various authors for permission to use their work.

Are you looking for someone to read the thread, thank people who volunteer, and insert their information into the MW? I can do that I think. I would also like to volunteer for some of the selections.

Thank you for your help,

Nan

I would like to claim Section 6 (once the 0 for Intro is gone) which is "All Hallowe'en."

Thank you,

Nan,

I'll remove the section for the introduction. Since you posted this as a new project, I assumed that you intended to BC it. The job of the Book Coordinator (BC) is coordinate the project up to the time when it is ready for cataloging at which point the Meta Coordinator (MC) takes over. That includes filling out the MW, monitoring the thread and interacting with the readers, entering claims and links to files into the MW, etc. If that is not what you planned, then you should have simply posted the book as a suggestion over in Book Suggestions. If you think you are ready to coordinate a group project, please see the links below.

This project is set up in the database. You should already have a password for access to the workflow system from your solos, and presumably have previously entered the information into the section compiler which then appears in the "Magic Window" in the top post. Here are some links to detailed instructions for for entering and editing information in the section compiler as the BC of a group project.

First Time Logging in to the Workflow

Instructions for BCs and DPLs

A version of the above is also in the LibriVox wiki in case you can't access Google Docs for some reason.

BCs - How to Update the Magic Window

You are welcome to claim as many sections as you wish. If BCing this project wasn't what you had in mind, let me know. If you decide to go ahead, I'm here to help as needed! :)

Jo, that's fine! I've had some experience with the MW, and I feel ready to do this. Thank you!

May I read the following poems?
1,6,8,15,19,24,28,33,42,44

It looks as if you may have missed "Woodland Animals" right after "November"
I would take it also, as well as Mondamin.

silverquill, thank you! I added the Woodland poem, which altered the numbers. Check the selections to make sure you have the ones you wanted. If not, I'll change them today.

I think they are all fine -- before that section.

If it isn't too much, could I also do the following?

47,61,73,82,83

ETA: Do you want the long disclaimer for all of these short poems? I know for poetry we use a short disclaimer, and also use it in works like this that have a mixture of long and short pieces, using the short disclaimer for sections of 800 words or less, as we do in the Birds and Nature series. So for this shorter pieces it is "(Title) by (author) read by (reader's name}" then at the end say "End of poem (or section name or number). This recording is in the public domain."

I'll do it how ever you want. I just wanted to make sure before I start recording.

""(Title) by (author) read by (reader's name}" then at the end say "End of poem (or section name or number). This recording is in the public domain.""

silverquill, definitely the short disclaimer. Some of these poems are but a few lines long! As short as possible. I will add this, and yes, do it this way.

Kitty, I have added you for selection 2. Thank you!

I am learning, and appreciate all information, hints, tips, etc. :)

Okay, I was mistaken. I didn't see that the numbers above this were also changed. So here are the correct section numbers:
1,5,7,14,15,18,23,27,32,41,43. Everything after that is okay.

I'll go with the short disclaimer, except for Section 1 since it starts the book.

You can check out the instruction in point 7 of this project to see an example of using mixed and long disclaimers:

here's already my section 2. A beautiful story that explains the change of the seasons, a bit like our Persephone and Hades myth.

https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/topazstorybook_02_skinner_128kb.mp3
Recording time: 11:06 min.

And I would like to claim Section 81: The Two Alms, or The Thanksgiving Day Gift, next, please. Do you want me to read this sentence under the title as well ? "Translated by special permission from Guerber’s Contes et Legendes, Ière Partie. Copyright by American Book Company."
