The Chaucer Storybook by Eva March Tappan (1854 - 1930) .

This project is now complete and can be found in our catalog at: https://librivox.org/the-chaucer-storybook-by-eva-march-tappan/

Geoffrey Chaucer's classic "Canterbury Tales" has here been rendered into clear and contemporary English prose. These classic stories are now available to those who would like to read them without struggling through Middle English poetry. The character and humour of The Wife of Bath and other larger-than-life people created by Chaucer are now accessible to a wider audience, including children. Please note that the original Canterbury Tales includes 24 stories, of which 11 are reproduced here. (Summary by Beth Thomas)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/chaucerstorybook00chau
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Not to jump the gun too much, but could I have the Friar's Tale once this is set up?

Beth, this reminds me of my university days :9: so I will venture out to MC my first group project for this cause. Let's see if I can give you a MW before the servers go down.

yes it seems to have worked. I have not put in a DPL yet, as I wasn't sure whether you wanted to DPL it yourself. Let me know and I change it. :)

Thanks Sonia! It is very late here, so I can't fill in the MW just yet.

Elijah, thanks for the offer but I plan to DPL this one myself.

Fritz, you're in! I'll add you to the MW when I populate it.

Beth, can I claim the Pardoner's Tale for myself, please ? I did a paper/presentation on that story at university and it would be a nice reminiscence :9:

thanks

yes, I just moved us to Short Works :) I think as the sections are quite short, it would fit better there than in Books. Is that ok with you, Beth ?

That's fine - only the Knight's Tale is long, the rest are quite short.

Please note that the original Canterbury Tales includes 24 stories, of which 13 are reproduced here.
may I just mention, that if you don't count the Preface and Section 1, which is not really one of the tales, but more a sort of prologue, there are only 11 tales in this book. :hmm:

Beth, I got some work for you :D Here is the Pardoner's Tale.

I can't believe, Mrs Tappan managed to transcribe the entire story and left out the very important motto of the Pardoner, that "Cupidity is the root of all evil". In class that was much-discussed topic, and I missed it here, although it of course was conveyed by the story. But despite that small omission, she did an excellent job with the story.

Recording time: 13:40 min.

Hope you like it :)
