A lot of us use the Checker program (written for Librivox by the husband of one of our admins) to check our volume -- and some other technical 'stuff'. It's very easy and perfectly safe (and free):

I saved as 128kbs, but had a lot of trouble with the checker, I downloaded it but could not open it and the java download page would not open for me no matter what I did. However I amplified by 5 dB so hopefully, that worked.
