The Spirit of Place and Other Essays by Alice Meynell (1847 - 1922).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/the-spirit-of-place-and-other-essays-by-alice-meynell/

Alice Meynell was an English essayist, critic, and poet who was also a leading suffragist, serving as vice-president of the Women Writers' Suffrage League. She and her husband Wilfrid Meynell were active in publishing and editing literary works including helping to launch the first works of Francis Thompson, author of "Hound of Heaven." This is a collection of her essays covering a wide range of topics from the opening essay on the "Spirit of Place" to a playful essay about the foot, and musing on topics such as rain, the horizon and the concluding essay, "Shadows." ( Larry Wilson)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1309
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Larry!

I may be jumping the gun here a bit (sorry), but just saw this on my way off to bed.

May I claim these sections please, if you don't have plans for them:

THE FOOT

RAIN

Thanks,

Nemo

May I take section 16, as i find the subject of habits and consciousness fascinating?
If so, here it is

(Since I was reading it anyway, figured I'd press record) :)

Scotty, a couple PL notes:

At time 0:34.5, I heard: As to literature, it has had the most curiously diverse influence, and the text reads: As to literature, this has had the most curiously diverse influence.

At time 1:01.5, I heard: and was hating the croaking of her little finger as she held her cup, and the text reads: and was hating the crooking of her little finger as she held her cup

This 1st one does not change the meaning that much, so I'll leave it up to you whether to change it or not. The 2nd one definitely changes the meaning.

Other than that, great job with the reading! .... your choice of a British accent was unique!

Thanks, Nemo. I changed croaking to crooking (too bad because I loved saying "croaking") and it to this, since I was in there. Re-uploaded now with same name and length.
