For some reason the Checker is showing your volume right around 89dB but when I look at your waves I would guess the volume was lower. Also, when I listen I have to turn the volume up all the way and then I really have to concentrate in order to hear you. Please amplify both files.
Noted! Hope it alright this time.

Here are my chapter 4 and 5.

This is only my second attempt at an audiobook recording.

Hopefully this is OK. Chapter 15: https://librivox.org/uploads/philchenevert/littlebusybodies_15_marks_128kb.mp3

Alpreup,
I'm sorry, but I'm not seeing / hearing the changes.

Section 4
Opening silence is almost 2 seconds. Please trim to less than 1 second.
Ending silence is almost 8 seconds. Please trim to 5 seconds.
Even though you are at 89dB you sound muffled. Please amplify by 2.

Section 5
Opening silence is more than 2 seconds. Please trim to less than 1 second.
Ending silence is 9.5 seconds. Please trim to 5 seconds.
Even though you are at 89dB you sound muffled. Please amplify by 2.

Hello Brett,
Welcome to LV! You did a great job on chapter 15!

Only two minor changes to make it PL OK.
The volume is too low at 83.2dB. We aim for 89dB with an allowable range of 86-92dB. You don’t have any spikes in your recording so you can do a straight amplification. 6 would be perfect.

The ending silence is ~7 seconds. Please trim to 5 seconds.

When you post a file, please be sure to include the file duration.

Hello Linny,

My apologies, I accidentally mistook the old one and sent it to you instead of the new one that I already fixed.

Hi linny,

Thanks for the feedback!

I want to get this right... but being a novice I'm a bit confused by the whole decibels thing. I see the scale from -1.0 to 1.0, yet we're talking about output levels of 86-92dB.

Obviously, they reference different things. I am wondering if there's a guide to help me get my head around it?

I've been working in Reaper, but can also import my rendered track into Audacity and perform the last +6dB amplification (as you suggested - if I understood you correctly).

However, I did that and used the ACX check plugin to get some info. Nothing there resembles the 86-92dB info I'm looking for. Also, it tells me my peaks exceed -3dB, which just confuses me even further!

Where in Audacity can I see what my overall volume is (to make sure I'm in that 86-92dB range before submitting again)?

Is there a forum where I can best ask for guidance? Or are you able to give that here?

Thanks so much!

Unfortunately I don't know anything about Reaper. You could try and post a question here: viewforum.php?f=23

Audacity isn't real user friendly for finding your current dB. You could download MP3Gain to check the level and then modify in your primary editing program, Reaper. Here is a video Phil made on MP3Gain. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=toef8_-qsms

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.

Perfect, thanks! I've downloaded that useful tool and fixed the volume problem.

Hopefully, this is a little closer to the mark:
