The Family of Love by Thomas Middleton (1580 - 1627) and others.

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/the-family-of-love-by-thomas-middleton/
The Family of Love is an early Jacobean city comedy, first published in 1608. Published anonymously, the play was long attributed to Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, although more recent scholarship suggests that Lording Barry may be the sole author. The play satirises the supposed sexual lasciviousness of the Familia Caritatis or "Family of Love," the religious sect founded by Henry Nicholis in the 16th century.

Maria is in love with Gerardine but her uncle, Glister the physician, opposes the match. Gerardine pretends to depart for a long ocean voyage, leaving a trunk containing his earthly possessions to Maria, but when Maria opens the trunk she finds Gerardine inside. Meanwhile, Glister cheats on his wife with the Familist wife of Purge the apothecary. Two dim-witted gallants, Gudgeon and Lipsalve, try to bed every woman they meet and want nothing more than to gain access to the secretive Familist Meeting House, which rumor has it is a bastion of free-love. With the help of Dryfat the merchant and Club the apprentice, Gerardine stages a mock trial with the intention of teaching everyone a lesson. (Wikipedia and Rob Board)
Please read from the prepared scripts, linked from the Magic Window and the second post in this thread. The second post also has role descriptions.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/worksthomasmidd00fletgoog
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Now that Knight of the Burning Pestle is almost finished, I decided to move on to another city comedy.

If you're thinking about joining us on this project, you might like to know more about the characters. A star (*) before the name means the role is open - claim away!

SCRIPTS

The original text is a pdf on Archive.org, which many find difficult to read from. Therefore, I have made scripts. You can view Google Docs or Google Webpage versions of each act, whichever you prefer to read from.

ACT 1: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 2: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 3: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 4: Google Doc | Google webpage
ACT 5: Google Doc | Google webpage

As usual, I would prefer to keep the casting of the main roles gender specific. The smaller roles can be claimed by any reader. I will play Lipsalve, and my niece and nephew will play Periwinkle and Shrimp. I prefer not to allocate readers more than one role (if the project takes a very long time to complete, we can consider doubling-up later).

MALE ROLES

Gerardine (JErruh-deen): 170 lines. A young lover and the play's lead male romantic role. Gerardine is smart and regularly tricks the other characters. At various points he is in disguise as a porter, an apparator (legal summonor), and a judge, so it may make sense to adopt different accents.

Lipsalve: 170 lines. A stupid young gallant, who is only interested in sex. Best friends with Gudgeon. A comic role.

Gudgeon (to rhyme with bludgeon): 110 lines. Another stupid young gallant, only interested in sex. Best friends with Lipsalve. A comic role.

Glister: 110 lines. A doctor and typical "meddling father". Married to Mistress Glister but he is sleeping with Mistress Purge. Hatches cunning plans to embarrass his sexual rivals. Older male.

Dryfat: 100 lines. A merchant who desires to be a member of the Family of Love, a free-love religious sect. Most of his lines come in Act 5, when he pretends to be a lawyer in a fake trial staged by Gerardine. May suit an older or younger male.

Purge: 90 lines. A greedy apothecary and cousin to Gerardine. His wife, Mistress Purge, is adulterous: at first he doesn't mind, but after witnessing her activities with other men he changes his mind. Older male.

FEMALE ROLES

Maria (muh-REE-uh, not muh-RYE-uh): 110 lines. Niece to Glister and lover or Gerardine. The play's lead female romantic role.

Mistress Purge: 100 lines. A snobbish member of the Family of Love, a free-love religious sect. The gallants, Lipsalve and Gudgeon, as well as the Merchant Dryfat, lust after her. A good comic role, what with her constant reprimanding of her husband and her snobbish behaviour towards those she deems her inferiors.

Mistress Glister: 60 lines. Married to Doctor Glister. Discovers that her husband is sleeping with Mistress Purge, and attempts to cuckold him in turn with Lipsalve and Gudgeon. As with Mistress Purge, she has a lot of good lines reprimanding her husband.

MALE/FEMALE ROLES

Club: 80 lines. A witty apprentice to Purge, the apothecary. Later pretends to be a court crier in Gerardine's fake trial, which may work best with a change in accent.

Shrimp: 40 lines. A page to one of the gallants.

Vial: <20 lines. A servant to Glister.

Within: <10 lines. This character is the doorperson at the home of the Family of Love, a free-love religious sect. He/She checks whether those who wish to enter know the correct password.

Periwinkle: <10 lines. A page to one of the gallants.

oooh this one is impossible to resist.

Do you think I would make a good Mistress Glister ? I'm tempted by that role...

Also I can be DPL :)

I hope I'm not being greedy with these male leads, but Gerardine is too hard to resist, what with the different accents and whatnot. :)

Ah, a Dekker play! (I have a Dekker page on Wordpress, though I haven't got the text of this play up yet).

I'd like the role of Glister, please. :D

Thanks, all!

I have assigned you the roles you claimed.

Sonia, if you could PL the roles I am editing (Shrimp, Periwinkle, and Lipsalve), that would be handy. I will PL the others, as I find that easier. Then you can PL the final play if that's OK. Hopefully it won't take us too long, as there aren't many roles to fill.

Here are the first two files.

Looking good! I'll put Sonia in as DPL, so she has MW access

Rob, if you paste the files in the Listen URL column in the MW (in the section compiler), you'll get a Listen-link in the Magic Window as it appears in the first post :)

Thanks, Sonia,

It's amazing what wonders a little extra pocket money can achieve!

Thanks for moving the files in the MW, as I know this is what most BCs prefer. It's not necessary in this project though, because I have personally found it easier to keep track of everything if I leave the files in their original order.
