I see what you mean. I think it would work if you read it this way:

The D of the Italic alphabets placed on its back reveals its early picture origin, while the Greek delta (Δ) represents a tent door. The Egyptian hieroglyphic for ten was a downward open loop. It is plain, therefore, that the horse-shoe is the mystical door reduced to its simplest possible form, and as a fetish for bringing good luck, or as a talisman to avert the evil eye, it would have no meaning except with the points downward.

I looked up the The Egyptian hieroglyphic for ten and it looks like a horseshoe. Some are calling it a loop. Others a heel bone. Pick which ever you prefer.
