Andrea42 wrote: May 16th, 2022, 2:19 pm Hello,
Thank you for your feedback about the background noise.
I'll look into reducing it in the future.
Do you have any advice on how to prevent noise before editing?
Here it is with the title fixed:

My experience has been that no matter what I do, my mic picks up the slightest background noises (the river running outside, even with the windows closed; the hum of my laptop; my slightest movements; breathing; etc.) Early on, I just resigned myself to the need to always apply noise reduction, which quite effectively removes it. If you’re using Audacity, it’s pretty straightforward: select a stretch where you’re not reading and pick “Get noise profile” then select the whole recording and apply it. Only takes a couple of minutes.

Good luck,
Winnifred

Here is "To Celia".
I played around with the gain on my mic, and I think that seemed to help a bit.

Is there any db level I should aim for when getting rid of background noise?

Here's 80: Length: 0:31 https://librivox.org/uploads/rapunzelina/famouspoems_080_various_128kb.mp3
and 40: Length: 10:34 https://librivox.org/uploads/rapunzelina/famouspoems_040_various_128kb.mp3
These are my notes on 40, let me know if you agree that these parts should be done, and what else I should fix at the same time:
0:20 should be "doffed"; I hear "dothed."
3:20 should be "noise"; I hear "noice"
5:31 I stumble a bit over the words "celestial sheen"
8:35 should be "in vain"; I hear "enveined"

I don’t believe you need to worry about the db level when it comes to noise reduction. I don’t. I generally apply noise reduction first, as soon as I’ve finished recording, then go through and listen for any pauses, loud breaths, odd gaps, etc., to cut out. Once I’m happy with the way the recording sounds, I use ReplayGain to check the db levels. That way, I only have to check db levels once. (Well, twice actually, I suppose, as the Checker also tests my MP3 version for db levels. Those aren’t usually different from what ReplayGain tells me.)
