“Love & It's Historical Shades: Poetic Expressions of Love Based on Varying Time Periods” , by Carl Sandburg (1878 - 1967), Walt Whitman (1819 - 1892) et al.

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/love-its-historical-shades-by-various/

Volunteers outside the USA: Carl Sandburg died in 1967. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 50 years; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
The theme around these poems is how poets expressed their ideas of love as well as the type of language used to convey said love through poetry; it also indirectly highlights how society may perceive love based on how those poets' values may have aligned with/against society during their era. All the poems revolve around a discussion of love through the language they used to describe their feelings of love as well as the images they paint through said language (whether it be expressed through older iterations of the English language or through more modern forms of the language, hence the year differences among each poet selected). (Summary by Amr Ahmed)

Target completion date: 2021-08-31

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

======================

Dear Librivox team,

I would like to introduce you to our project. Students from Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar (a U.S. medical school in the Middle East) recorded high-quality spoken poetry in soundproof rooms at Northwestern University in Qatar with the support of the Qatar National Library to contribute to the Librivox project. We would really appreciate it if you could help us find a Meta-Coordinator and proof listeners and guide us through the process of uploading our recordings to your website.

We have finished editing, noise removal, and adjustment to Librivox specifications for one complete project (a 1-minute clip is available for preview).

Additionally, we have 11 other separate edited recordings of approximately 30-45 minutes each in English, French, Romanian, Urdu, and Arabic. Our goal is to have 4 complete projects uploaded by August 2021.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Maryam Arabi

Hello Maryam & Alan,

Welcome to LibriVox! Two questions to start with:

1) Will each reader on your team have a LibriVox account of their own and upload their recordings through it? This is our standard process, so that each contribution is credited to the individual contributor(s) in the catalog. Or are you thinking of using a single group account?

2) Were the readings made from sources that are in the public domain according to our policy? We would need to have the URL of each source if it's online, or an image of the title page if it's a physical book, in order to perform a copyright check.

Also, when launching a new project, you'll need to copy all of the code from the Project Template Generator and paste it into a message in this forum.

It makes me a bit nervous that you already seem to have invested a good deal of effort into making recordings before engaging us to help you verify the tech specs of your setup and copyright status of your sources, and hopefully there won't be any major issues to address retrospectively.

Dear Michael:

Thank you for your quick reply. Please see the responses to your questions below.

Yes, we can ask each reader to set up an account.

Yes, the copyrights are 1557, 1855, and 1916 and we can provide e-text links or the title page image. Most texts were taken from archiv.org. Additionally, all of the audio files include the required intro and outro.

Also, when launching a new project, you'll need to copy all of the code from the Project Template Generator and paste it into a message in this forum.

We posted a message to the New Project Launchpad forum and included the autogenerated project number, and below please find the complete message.

Hi, Maryam. That's great. If you will be the BC (Book Coordinator) for this project and you have all the recordings, you may upload them yourself and assign each one to its reader's account.

In order to ensure that the recording is in the public domain in the US, where our servers are located, we need to verify not only the original publication date of the work, but also the publication date of the edition of the recorded text. We can read from a scan where the title page shows a publication year of 1925 or earlier, or a text from Gutenberg.org that is marked "Public domain in the USA" (as almost all of them are). If you used a later edition for these recordings, we would need to see a public domain edition which matches the recorded text.

Also, please note the disclaimer in red at the top of the template above ("Volunteers outside the USA"). Our contributors who are outside the US are personally responsible for verifying that the text is in the public domain according to copyright laws of their own country.

Perfect. I've moved it to the top of the thread and created a Magic Window for you. Once the copyright check is done and you confirm that you'll be BC, I'll give you instructions for accessing it.

Dear Michael:

1. Hi, Maryam. That's great. If you will be the BC (Book Coordinator) for this project and you have all the recordings, you may upload them yourself and assign each one to its reader's account.
Yes, I would be more than happy to be the BC for this project. We will also ask the readers to create an account for themselves.

We have checked the editions below which are all published before 1925:

Perfect, thank you so much. We also wanted to confirm the intros and outros for the audio files. The ones that we used for the individual poems are as follows:
- Intro: " 'Name of poem' by 'Name of the author', read for Librivox.org by Amr Ahmed"
- Outro: "End of poem. This recording is in the public domain."
The title that we shared was created by the reader, not the title of a book. This project is a selection of poems chosen by the reader. Please let us know what the appropriate intro and outro would be, and we would be happy to post each individual poem separately if needed.

We would really appreciate it if we could meet with you via Zoom this week to discuss this project in more detail and clarify all doubts. We are available from 3:00pm - 10:00pm AST (UTC + 3:00).

Thank you for your help.

Also, in case the intro and outro need to be changed, we would be more than happy to rerecord those parts again with the reader. We can discuss this further during our meeting, if possible.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Maryam, that's great. As BC, you will be in charge of filling out the Magic Window. Before you can access a Magic Window for the first time, you will need to set up a password for logging into the workflow system, as described here:

How to log in to the workflow system for the first time

Instructions for managing the Magic Window can be found on this wiki page:

https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/BC%27s:_How_to_update_the_Magic_Window

Since this is a collection with multiple authors, you'll also need to follow the section "Special Instructions for Collections".

If you prefer to see these instructions in video form, we have one here:

We have checked the editions below which are all published before 1925:

- Whitman:
To A Stranger: https://archive.org/details/dli.granth.93196/page/292/mode/2up?q=to+a+stranger
These are all pefect.

Hmm, they do have the original scans, which are in the public domain, but they also stipulate some use restrictions. It's better use scans for these editions that have no strings attached:

1871:

1881:

1891:

Yes, that's our standard format for a collection of short poems, where there's a separate recording for each poem. I've also updated it in the MW.
We would really appreciate it if we could meet with you via Zoom this week to discuss this project in more detail and clarify all doubts. We are available from 3:00pm - 10:00pm AST (UTC + 3:00).
Some fellow volunteers organize occasional Zoom workshops, but we don't do personal Zoom sessions. If you have any questions, please ask them here, and I'll be happy to help. We also have many instructional videos.

Hello Michael,
I am happy to inform you that all 13 poems have been successfully uploaded along with their corresponding details and e-text links. They are now ready for proof listening. We wanted to kindly ask what the process is to get a proof listener for our project?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Maryam,

Good to see the project is going forward. :) I went ahead and checked the tech specs of the first two recordings. They require some changes to meet our standard requirements:

1) The recordings should be in mono, not stereo. In Audacity, this is done by checking the box "Force export to mono" during export to mp3.

2) The volume should be in the range 86-92 dB (89 dB being ideal). The volume of section 1 is 94.5 dB. In Audacity, you can use the Amplify effect with a negative value to de-amplify, as described here:

https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Amplifying

You can verify all our tech specs yourself using the Checker program:

https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker

Please revise the recordings as needed, so that all of them are in mono and within the target volume range, and then we can advertise for a PL.

Also, since this is a collection, please fill out the metadata, as described here:

https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/BC%27s:_How_to_update_the_Magic_Window#Special_Instructions_for_Collections_.E2.80.93_Entering_Section_Metadata

For the future, in solo projects you don't need to include word counts. This is done in group projects in order to give potential readers an idea about the amount of work that each section would take.

Hello Michael,

I have done as you suggested and uploaded all the edited audio files to the Magic Window. I checked all of them on the Checker application and they all passed so hopefully there shouldn't be any more technical issues, and we are ready for proof listening.

Kindly let us know how we can proceed to find a PL, and thank you so much for your help!

Thanks for making the changes, Maryam. I've added a ~ sign to the subject line to indicate that the project is looking for PLs. You can also post an announcement in the forum Listeners & Editors Wanted. The instructions are pinned at the top of the forum:

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=17680

After you create the new post, an admin will pin it to the top as well.
