hi Foon, I had a listen to both sections now. You didn't choose the most easy texts to practice your German ;) I managed to understand most of it despite some accent, but some words indeed need to be corrected, I'm afraid, otherwise it will sound a bit incomprehensible.

Here is what I would suggest:

for Minerva:

> at 0:42: “Ungern macht' ich so stolzen Ruf zu schanden“ – here you pronounce the ‚sch‘ like in Dutch ;) in German it’s the sound like this English ‚sh‘. So “schanden” has the same initial sound as the English “shame”

> at 0:59: “Sie hätte nie vor Paris dort gestanden“ – no need to say „Paris“ in the French way, it might get confused with the city. In German you pronounce the name of this boy PAH-riss (stress on first syllable, and “ah” sounds longer than in the city)

for Vulcan:

> at 0:40: “bei seines Hauptes Schmerz!“ – I hear „Häuptes“ instead of „Hauptes“ (English ‚ow‘ sound for ‚au‘)

> at 0:43: „Kühn traf des Vaters Stirn voll Majestät“ – I hear „gürn“ instead of „kühn“

> at 1:03: „Dem giebt Ersatz der Reiz der Formen nicht!“ – you say „reis“ instead of „Reiz“ – the ‚z‘ sounds in German like the ‚ts‘ in English. So there needs to be a ‚t‘ sound before the ‚s‘ (/reits/)

I think the rest would be comprehensible enough to follow, but if you could correct these few lines, that'd be helpful.

Thanks

Another suggestion you may want to practice is the 'ch' sound. Depending on what position it is in the word or what vowels surround it, it gets a different pronunciation. A good example is "ich" and "ach", which have two completely different sounds. The "ach" would be more a Dutch guttural sound but the "ich" is softer. But the words are comprehensible because usually you never have a word that can have both pronunciations and mean a different thing (not like in English). So native speakers would automatically correct that sound in their mind when they hear it.

Thank you Sonia! I'd be happy to correct these. However, if you feel like my non-fluency comes out too much, I'd also be happy if my submissions are just scrapped. I wouldn't be offended at all. I had German in school for years, but the focus was very strongly on reading & comprehension, and speaking didn't come up that often. And I'd be perfectly content with the notion that I can read German with some ease, but can't speak it. ;)
Let me know what you think? Truly, I wouldn't mind. It needs to be a pleasant listening experience, that's the most important thing!

sorry, I somehow have missed this post all these days

Well...yes, it is more difficult to understand than if it was read by a native German speaker, but I was able to understand it nevertheless. So yes, we can keep it, no worries. :) If you correct the things that were too incomprehensible, the rest should be fine.
