naturally to avoid all controversy, you could say you read from Gallica, that way you're sure it's the correct translator. The book also has nice engravings :) And as I said, the prologue is word-perfect the same, and the 1st chapter had only minor differences, which I probably wouldn't even have flagged under the "standard PL rule". So nothing is lost if you decide to change the source now. It's still early days, luckily.

I'm going to look at that Gallica text this morning. I pulled up another edition of the French translation that I had bought a couple of years ago on Amazon, and that one said "Translation by Albert Savine." Quelle mystère!

no really, if you find him as translator already in two places, I think your text is safe. I was only puzzled because it said "editor" otherwise I wouldn't even have bothered to check further LOL (maybe I shouldn't have  )

ah regarding the end silences, I found the thread back where it was discussed and what the outcome was:

viewtopic.php?f=24&t=62943

it's still unofficial I guess, so you can do as you wish :) on the second page though they seem to want to implement it at some point. Only the templates need tweaking then.

Thanks, Sonia. I sent a pm to Sara about the translator question. I looked at the 1920 text from Gallica, and it looks more official to me, since it is a scan of the actual book. Other sources online might have been going on the Gutenberg link. I'll see if maybe Sara wants me to change it to this text.
Thank you!

Sara, I looked up Eugène Tardieu, and he does show up on the French Wikipedia page as being the translator of Le Portrait de Dorian Gray.
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Portrait_de_Dorian_Gray

He is also credited with the 1891 publication
https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/8106498.Eug_ne_Tardieu

I think Gutenberg picked up the 1893 edition that had been put out by Albert Savine, Editor. Consequently, several online sources have credited Savine with being the translator.

The two versions are identical. The few little omissions of words are probably due to the online generation of the text. Is there some way we could change our information on the template to show Tardieu as the translator, and list the text source as the Gallica link? I will read only from that text from now on, and change the introduction in the preface to credit Eugène Tardieu as translator.
I know there's a way I can edit my summary to show Tardieu as translator, but I cannot change the information on the template page itself. If ii's easier for you, I could generate a new template, and once we have it, we could delete the current one.

I am so sorry for this mix-up. I'm sure you don't need any more work than what you already have.
At least this is very early in the recording process.

If you prefer the Gallica text, sure, go ahead and use it, but my recommendation would be to stay with Gutenberg.

In general, we trust Gutenberg above all other sources. They have a rigorous process for ensuring copyright and we know if something is cleared by them it is OK. Several of us (me included) volunteer over there as well so we know a bit about their proofing process. The scans get 3 rounds of proofing by 3 separate humans, then there are 2 rounds of formatting checks, and then it goes for more "post-processing" which is a bit of a black box for me because I've never done that. And in the end, we get something that is incredibly user-friendly, unlike the scans on Archive, Gallica, etc. which are kind of a pain to read from.

In this case, the Bibrec shows Albert Savine as the translator (go to http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/14192 and then find the little tabs that say Download and Bibrec). Also from Savine's author page on Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/8201), it looks like he translated several of Oscar Wilde's works.

Bottom line, I have no idea why they chose to use the word "editor" in the text itself, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: the 10 seconds, either way is OK with me. I'd suggest you stick to one way or the other throughout the book, though.

Sonia - thanks for the PL'ing. You can access the MW even without being DPL with your new purple powers! There's a bit of a courtesy thing there (e.g., just because I can go messing around in other people's MW's, doesn't mean I should), but for me, I think if you've PL'd some sections it's perfectly reasonable to go in and mark them.

Sara, sounds good enough to me! Wow, so now I discovered the Bibrec tab, thanks to you! It definitely does state that Albert Savine is the translator, so we are in the clear. I will definitely then stick with the Gutenberg text. Possibly, Eugène Tardieu was Albert Savine's "nom de plume" later on. Many writers had several names they would use.
Thank you for your info on this. I feel better about it. No need to change anything. I have just fixed the pause in the Preface, and I'll upload that when I can get to my computer, later this evening.

thank you Sarah, and I would NEVER butt into another's MW without being asked  In fact, I think you can make it official and put me in as DPL, as I've started now.

Linda, your Preface is PL ok now. So I'll change the status now in the MW. I see you already marked Chapter 1 PL ok, so two sections are done. Off to a good start.

Hi Sara! Yes, Sonia would be the last one to ever step into another project's MW unannounced. In fact, she only listened to my files because I asked her to please PL if she had the time.
:D

I'm happy to have you as DPL, Sonia! Thank you! I didn't mark Chapter 1 PL Ok, though. It must have been Sara. If you still think I should take off 5 seconds from the end, I can do that, and re-send the file. I haven't done anything with that file yet.

well, it's your book, so your decision :) only as Sarah said, stay consistent throughout the book, whatever you decide.

OK, I think I will remove the extra 5 seconds. I'll do that today, and send you the corrected file.

Sorry - yes, that was me! How ironic that I caused problems by butting into my own MW.

I knew you wanted to fix the pause in the Preface, so I marked that as See PL Notes, but messed up the other one. Do whichever you like re the 5 vs 10 seconds, and I will keep out. :) As MC, I generally do stay out of the MW unless there are problems, as it's the soloists responsibility to keep it up to date. I thought I was helping you get up and running... my intentions were good, but I should have left it.

ETA: cross-posted re 5 seconds - sounds good to me!

Hi Sara!
No problem about the PL Ok on Chapter 1. Of course, we know your intentions were good! :D
I'll remove those extra 5 seconds and re-send today. It makes sense to me, because when I listen to librivox books on my iPad, they play continuously, chapter through chapter. I wouldn't want to sit through 10 seconds of silence from one chapter to the other.
Thank you again for the attention to this project. I know you must be very busy with a lot of other projects as well. Now that we have a DPL, you can relax here a bit more. Lol :D
