Le Portrait de Dorian Gray par Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900). Traduit par Eugène Tardieu (1920).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/le-portrait-de-dorian-gray-by-oscar-wilde/

Merci!

Also, Smijen, for some reason, the link to the uploader does not work on this page.

It's impossible to click on it. I had to go to another one of my projects to use the uploader link.

Thank you!

Well, we haven't managed to catch a PL'er. I will move us over to Going Solo, just to keep the Launch Pad tidy. Once you have some chapters posted, we can "advertise" for one in the Listeners Wanted thread.

That sounds good, Smijen. I'm sure we'll get a DPL later. I'll keep recording chapters.
Thank you for checking in!

all right Linda, I have a bit of time today, so I downloaded your first two sections, to bring this project up to date.

The preface is excellently read and without any errors. I love these short witticisms by Oscar Wilde :9:

If I had to say something, there is one pause from 3:32 to 3:35 which feels a bit too long for my taste, but it's as you wish. Other than that, it can be marked PL ok.

On the other hand, I'm not so sure about the translator. :hmm: Albert Savine is listed as being the "editor", in Gutenberg. And at least the French wikipedia doesn't name him among the known translators. Very often the translators are not mentioned in the old books.

I made a bit of a research and found the book on Gallica translated by Eugène Tardieu and checking the entire Preface, the beginning of the first chapter and the very last page of the book, the text is so far 100% identical. So either he is also the translator of the Gutenberg text, or he did some major plagiarism to translate it word for word the same. ;)

Will do Chapter 1 soon...

and Chapter 1 is also perfectly and flawlessly read. It's a very good translation I find. The esthetic sense of the original is maintained.

I love your nonchalante voice for Lord Henry, and this annoying lady was simply hilarious  Well done. Gives the whole story life and vivacity.

Oh and I checked the first few pages with the Gallica link I gave you. So it's basically the same text word for word. I found some half a dozen words that were synonyms or inserted, but nothing huge. So it might be that it's another translator, but then Tardieu is really a plagiarist LOL or it might be that Gutenberg made those few errors or maybe the Gallica text is simply a revised copy by the same translator a few years later. I personally tend to think the last one is correct. But we can't know for sure.

Only one suggestion: there has been a discussion going with the result that 5 seconds at the end are now enough, even for recordings longer than 30 minutes. I personally only leave 5 seconds from now on for my recordings. But I think 10 are still accepted, if the reader wishes to maintain them. Just wanted to tell you, in case you didn't know about the amending of the rule.

As I said, totally PL ok.

Hi Sonia,
I tried to reply to your first comment, but Librivox would not submit it, for some reason. Let's look into this Eugène Tardieu possibility a bit further. It's going to take me a while to finish the book, and I can always change the name of the translator, as I mention it in the Preface. I also had my doubts about Albert Savine, and I did some research too, coming up with a page listing his written works. One source confirmed that he translated Dorian Gray. But you may be right, that he plagiarized Tardieu's translation. If that's the case, I'll ask Smijen to change the translator name on the page info.

Thank you for your PL work (you are the best!)
I'll get to work on listening to your poem now.
:D

And no, I didn't know that now the policy had changed about 10 minutes after a file of more than 30 minutes. Just following the directions. If I need to, I can cut off the extra five minutes. Let me know if I should do that, to follow current policy.

oh ok, if you found a reliable source for that then it's fine I guess.
But you may be right, that he plagiarized Tardieu's translation.
no in this case the Gallica text was later, so Tardieu would have plagiarized Savine. Seems that you are in the clear then.
:D

I'm not sure how reinforced it will be. Maybe each reader can do as they wish in the end, but since 5 seconds are enough, the DPL shouldn't insist on 10 simply because it's over 30 minutes. Maybe there is nothing official yet :hmm:

Let's see what Sarah says...

Thanks, Sonia. Let's see what Sarah says.
I'm still going to look into that question of Tardieu versus Savine. It's odd that Savine is credited with "Editeur". But if the Gallica text is later, maybe the reverse is true. I still need to look at the Gallica text.
It's only 8:40am here, and I just got up. Lol

naturally to avoid all controversy, you could say you read from Gallica, that way you're sure it's the correct translator. The book also has nice engravings :) And as I said, the prologue is word-perfect the same, and the 1st chapter had only minor differences, which I probably wouldn't even have flagged under the "standard PL rule". So nothing is lost if you decide to change the source now. It's still early days, luckily.
