Barrack-Room Ballads, by Rudyard Kipling (1868 - 1936)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/barrack-room-ballads-by-rudyard-kipling/

Barrack-Room Ballads is a collection of poems by Rudyard Kipling which describe life in the British Army, particularly in India, in his time. The poems are written in the voice and language of soldiers of that time. The collection includes some of his best known poems. (Summary by Alan Mapstone)
Source text (please read only from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/files/2819/2819-h/2819-h.htm

Deadline: Please submit your recording within 2 months of placing your claim. If you cannot complete the recording within this time, please post in the thread to relinquish your claim or to ask the BC for an extension. If your recording is not completed by the deadline, your claim may be reassigned at the BC's discretion.

Claiming sections: Look in the Magic Window below for the list of available sections. Post a reply in this thread asking for the section you would like to record. I would like to restrict initial claims to a maximum of 5 poems per reader.

Please Note: These poems are written in the voice and language of the British Army in Victorian times. Some of this language may be uncomfortable to modern readers. Before claiming please read through the poem to ensure that you are comfortable with the subject and language.

This collection contains some of Kipling's most well-known poems. I am not aware of any recording of this collection on LV although some of the poems occur in poetry collections.

I have included a warning about the nature of some of the language :hmm:

I will restrict initial claims to a maximum of 5 poems per reader. I intend to read several poems myself. Also others if it becomes necessary. :?:

MC and DPL would be most welcome :)

Here are sections 3 and 31.

https://librivox.org/uploads/lynnet/barrackroomballads_03_kipling_128kb.mp3
(2.58)

https://librivox.org/uploads/lynnet/barrackroomballads_31_kipling_128kb.mp3
(2.48)

And I checked some of the words towards the end of "The Mother Lodge", to see if I'd made any big mistakes in pronunciation. Interesting result:

"trichies" were a type of cheroot originating from Trichinopoli, Tamil Nadu
"bog-darn" was a cigar lighter
"Khansamah" was the house steward or butler
"bottle-khana" was the pantry

Hi Peter
Both sections are PL OK!
Thanks for getting us off to a good start, I thought you got the accent well

I am always curious about the role played by Freemasonry in British India, not something that gets mentioned much in the history books :hmm:

Dedication

1.11

I think the T.A. referred to here is Tommy Atkins, the archetypal British Soldier invented by Kipling.

May I read sections 5 & 6?

Also, I'm happy to DPL as well - except my own sections, of course.

Hi Kristen
Thanks for the offer to DPL, welcome to the project. :D

I have assigned sections 5 & 6 to you, I will PL them.

I intend to read quite a few of these poems myself, which is why I could not PL it, but I will be happy to help with any PL for other readers.

lynney Can you put Kristen MrsHand in as DPL please!
