Hi
I am new to Librivox. I am interested in reading from the works of an Irish author Seamus O'Kelly. My question is does the text I read from have to be available online. I note all the short story readers above are providing a link to the text.

Regards
Mary.

Hi Mary
Welcome to Librivox and thank you for asking.

Our rules are governed by Copyright laws.
Our servers are in the US, so all works must be in the Public Domain in the US... which generally means pre-1924 (as of January 1), although there are some exceptions.
In addition, the work needs to be Public Domain wherever you, the reader, are located. Obviously, if you are in the US, that's the same. If you are in a different country, the rules will be different... for example, for much of Europe, it is 70 years after the death of the author. In Australia, it is 50 years after the death of an author who died after 1954 (and, I think, 70 if they died before their law changed)

Most readers use online texts, which are easy for us to verify as PD. However, it is not essential... but to get around that, we need a scanned copy of the front page of your text, showing the copyright information. FYI, just because a book was written in 1750, doesn't mean the copy you are using is PD, as if even one word was changed in a 1950 edition, the copyright was re-set to 1950. Yes, copyright law is a quagmire  and as we are a volunteer body, with no lawyers or money to defend lawsuits, we err on the side of caution.
