sacapsie wrote: December 29th, 2021, 5:58 pm You've convinced me that it's a dumb idea, and that there isn't much enthusiasm for it :) I've since rerouted my energies elsewhere. If someone starts a multi-version poetry project for a poem that appeals to me, I might contribute. But there are so many gaps in the catalog here that probably should be filled before that. There is hardly any Chekhov, Gogol, many others that both native Russian listeners and second-language learners might appreciate.

Poetry is nice for newbie readers such as myself because the meter makes it easier to deal with the pre-revolutionary orthography (which tbh still trips me up when I try to read it out loud in prose). And it's usually short. So it's a bit less intimidating than some of the current open projects. the Афанасьев collection is pretty frightening. I read it as a kid (in a different edition, Soviet-era) and don't remember it being quite this hard.

And there are over a thousand of these in the catalog, if you want to hear the finished ones. I promise, they are fun. But, as I said, I've given up and moved on to other things, so we can drop this.

PERCIVAL DEARMER (1867–1936)

A First Russian Reader (1915) · With Vyacheslav A. Tananevich (????–????)

💬 A moderate reading pace would be useful for language learning listeners.

📖 Preface in English. Divided into short bits.

ℹ️ "The casual beginner in most West European languages toys for a while with a grammar, and then starts to read such easy books as his friends may recommend. This is not possible with Russian. Even when the student has worked long and diligently at his grafmmar, he finds that an ordinary Russian novel is still almost a sealed book to him : he remembers how easily he once passed from school-boy Latin and French to Italian or Spanish, or from German to Dutch ; and he groans at the difference. Moreover, books printed for Russians are not accented, and an unaccented text is both difficult and dangerous to a foreigner in the first year or two of his studies. The dictionary presents an added obstacle (after the Russian character has been mastered), owing to the richness and flexibility of a peculiarly subtle and fine language. There are also many turns and idioms. This First Russian Reader therefore consists of the easiest little stories from Tolstoy (who was a master of style even in his shortest and simplest writings), duly accented, with notes unblushingly redundant, and a vocabulary which it is hoped contains every single word used in the text. In doing the work Mr. Tananevich and I have been greatly helped by Miss Nan Knowles and Countess Véra Poutiatine, to whom we tender our sincerest thanks. We confidently believe that if after studying the easy conversation grammar of Bondar or that of Motti, the student works carefully at this Reader, going through it more than once, he will begin to learn to read Eussian." (Preface)

Всем привет!
Мне подогнали книгу для изучающих русский язык в PD. Короткие рассказы Льва Толстого, больше похожие на сказки или басни, снабжены ударениями и пояснениями на англ. Качество сканов и печати отличное: ять и твёрдый знак хорошо различимы.
Кому интересно, дайте, пожалуйста, знать.
