I download books using the downthemall addon.
This used to work quite well but lately I am getting
odd chapters and sometimes the whole book will not play.
there is a windows message to say windows cannot play
the file because they don't know the source, even after
playing chapters which presumably came from the same
source. I believe the problem to be associated with error
code ox80004005.
At times the book will start with chapter 16 or other strange
things.
Any clues to the solution anyone, before I buy a new
large screen win10 laptop.

That is a Windows error code, and they are always a bit of a mystery. What operating system is on your computer - Windows XP, Windows 7 etc? One possibility is malware on your computer, from what I read. If you haven't checked your computer for malware recently, there is a free version of Malwarebytes which you can download here.

Thank you Ruth,I am running windows7.
I used the malware program to clear 96
nasties. I will download a book later to
see if it has cured the problem.

I downloaded 2 books, "stretton street affair"
and "The belton estate"
Preface and chapter 1 of stretton st play ok but
chapters 2 10 12 14 16 17 18 26 and 29 would not play.
I deleted the book and downloaded it again, but this time
the first 4 chapters were missing and I gave up when
chapter 5 started to play.
The "belton estate" was ok
I have a broad band connection but my top
download speed is never more than 1.5mbs
and after 3pm when the school children get home
the speed can drop bbelow dial up speed!
But then, this is New Zealand after all!We will
eventually get ultra high speed fibre.
I will just have to be satisfied with 50% success
with my choices. Thank you Ruth and Kara
and all the rest of the team.

Partial success, I suppose ;).

It certainly sounds like a connection problem, Tom. If you use the Firefox browser, may I suggest you try the Downthemall add-on? This allows you to download all the files on one page, and I hope it will help with the problems you are experiencing.

You can set the preferences to download just the 64kbps files, or just the 128kbps files. There is more information on how to do this on our Wiki page here.

Yes Ruth I have been using firefox and downthemall
for several years, much better than itunes.
I did try to do something with the filters but not sure
to what effect. It looks as though firefox is going to
change , for the worse unfortunately. have to start
looking for alternatives but not IE please!
I will try the filters again, they look as if they need
an enigma code breaker to read them. Just looking
at them makes my eyes water or I should say my
eye as I have only one! Talking about eyes, I downed
another book-- "eye for an eye" and I think it is whole.

Yes, I just read that Firefox is doing more change for change's sake. Very annoying. I have a word count plugin that isn't supposed to have worked since about 20 FF versions ago, but it still works despite their best efforts to ruin it ;).

Just as a matter of interest, do you download the zip files, Tom? You can always download the individual files that you are missing. It must be very frustrating, though.
