[RESOLVED] downloading Psmith in the City

Hi. I am unable to download Psmith in the City. The error message I get is that the input media format is invalid. Thank you.

It didn't work when I tried to download the zip file of the entire book. Then I tried to download the section with chapters 1-3 and that didn't work either, so then I waited a while and tried again, and then I posted asking for help.

The format I used was mp3@64kbps. Did I answer your questions?

Okay, I've managed to download both the zip file, and the 64kbps individual MP3 of Chapters 1-3. The zipfile extracted correctly on my Windows Vista system, and the first file in the extracted folder played correctly (at least the first couple of minutes did), as did the individual 64kbps mp3.

I strongly suspect that you've run into the dreaded "Archive Overload" problem, since their counter indicates over 22,000 downloads of the project. I've run into a similar error message in the past, as well as Vista telling me that the server was not accessible, when trying to download, and on the next attempt I get a web page stating the Archive servers are experiencing problems. Please try to download the file(s) again, and if you continue to have problems, please let us know...we'll do our best to try to solve them.

My computer is XP. I tried again and got the following error message for both the entire book zipped and for chapters 1-3:

C00D0BB8: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for the following reason:

You are trying to play an MP3 file that contains compressed ID3 headers. The ID3 header is a portion of the file that stores the song's album information (for example, the song name, artist name, album name, and genre). This information is sometimes called a "tag."
To fix the problem, make a copy of the file and then use a non-Microsoft ID3 tag editing program to remove or reset the file's ID3 headers. After you remove the ID3 headers, Windows Media Player should be able to play the MP3 file.

Attempting to remove ID3 headers might damage the file and make it unplayable. Therefore, always make a copy of the file before you edit it.

If this solution does not resolve the problem, the file might be corrupted.

When archive.org has problems, listeners often end up with corrupted downloads. This almost certainly the case here. I suggest you try again tomorrow or the next day. Sorry for the inconvenience and I hope you get to hear the story soon :)

I tried again to download the story and get the same errors as before. I've downloaded other books that work fine. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

Q. Why can't I play an MP3 file?
A. If you receive a message that contains error codes 0xC00D0BB8 or 0xC00D1199 when trying to play an .mp3 file, the problem might be because the file has a compressed or unsynchronized ID3 header that the Player does not support for security reasons. For more information about unsynchronized ID3 headers, in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, see article 814129, "Error in Windows Media Player 9 Series When You Play Specific MP3 Files."
For compressed headers or other ID3v2 data, you can use a tag editing program to remove the information. For example, you can use the Advanced WMA Workshop, available from http://www.LitexMedia.com/

Also windows media player 9 had a bug that was fixed by either upgrading to player 10 or 11 or installing the hotfix listed here:
