The Rehearsal, by George Villiers (1628 - 1687)
A satirical play poking fun at the overblown tragedies produced in the time of the Restoration, first staged in 1671. It uses the device of having three men working to develop a new play and having the actors trying out various scenes. The play itself is made up almost entirely of excerpts of existing dramatic works, and especially at those of John Dryden. (In the etext of the printed play which you can access from the link below, the play script is published on the right hand pages with every left hand page full of footnotes describing from which plays the scenes, lines, and allusions are taken.) (Summary by ToddHW)
This project is complete. Audio files may be found on our Librivox catalog page at https://librivox.org/the-rehearsal-by-george-villiers/

Devorah suggested this play about making a play, and I could not resist offering it. She will read the Stage Directions and DPL (once Tyranny of the Dark finishes) to make sure it all comes out mostly okay. She will not likely be able to make the play make sense though, so hang on...

Gender neutral, of course.

Be careful in following the script. I should mention first that this play has those pesky f's for s's in the printing. And as I say in the summary above, the script is on the right hand pages of the Archive book scan, while the left hand pages - which we do NOT read - are filled with interesting footnotes. Scrolling through using a single page wide view will confuse you a lot...

I take it, Todd, that you don't want the introduction read, or the Life and Times of George Villiers? If you do, I'll read it with pleasure, but of course it will take some time. Just let me know!
