The Scarecrow and Other Stories, by G. Ranger Wormser (1893 - 1953)
G. Ranger Wormser was a forgotten master of horror fiction, specializing in a kind of creeping dread and subtle psychological horror that would later be exhibited to such great effect by authors like Shirley Jackson.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Section 1 notes:
1:01 remove sniff
14:02 remove mistaken sentence "but I ain't thought nothing like this could ever happen (whistle)"
20:14 remove first "of". Should be "Down there to the left the acres of potatoes." I heard "Down there to the left of the acres of potatoes."

I am not yet authorized to the MW.

Yea, this wasn't the greatest project to tackle right after that Maurice Level book. Lots of grim subject matter...

(In my defense, I did try to do Conjure Wife but the copyright police got onto me...)
