The Last Evolution, by John Wood Campbell. Jr. (1910 - 1971)

This project can now be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/the-last-evolution-by-john-wood-campbell-jr/
"It was 2538 years After the Year of the Son of Man. For six centuries mankind had been developing machines. The Ear-apparatus was discovered as early as seven hundred years before. The Eye came later, the Brain came much later. But by 2500, the machines had been developed to think, and act and work with perfect independence. Man lived on the products of the machine, and the machines lived to themselves very happily, and contentedly. Machines are designed to help and cooperate. It was easy to do the simple duties they needed to do that men might live well. And men had created them. Most of mankind were quite useless, for they lived in a world where no productive work was necessary." the author (Summary by the author)

John Wood Campbell, Jr. (1910–1971) was an American science fiction writer and editor. As editor of Astounding Science Fiction (later renamed Analog Science Fiction and Fact) from late 1937 until his death, he is generally credited with shaping the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Isaac Asimov called Campbell "the most powerful force in science fiction ever, and for the first ten years of his editorship he dominated the field completely."
I am looking for a DPL for this story.

And part 2 is ready. What a message of hope to mankind, eh? To be replaced by machines.

Section 2 is PL Ok. Interesting end, essentially, this is your future, human, whether you believe it or not.

Well, this is what Campbell wrote in 1932. He did go a different route but at least his 'vision' had machines staying loyal and true to their inventors and not becoming hostile to humans and all life as so many current authors write will happen. I much prefer this way. And his ending was inventive, having an evolved machine that was alive with the last 2 humans, tell the story, then 125,000 years later having one of the pure energy machines send it back in time to 1932. You did not comment on, and I hope you did not catch, the discrepancy of the beginning of the story being read in my 'normal' narrative voice that sounds human and the last part being read in the machine voice of F2. Both were by F2 but I did not fully realize it until part 1 was finished and, in line with my firm rule of 'let's not be too picky', felt it would not detract from the story too much.
I Thank you for listening to this odd story by a giant of SF history. Here is a sheep jumping rope to compensate you for your work Image

whoops, somehow this got seperated.

My response got separated. No sheep were harmed in making this reply. Image Please let me know if you caught the difference in the starting voice and the later voice for F2.
EDIT: see post two above this.
