Recurrence, by Dorothy Parker (1893 - 1967)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/recurrence-by-dorothy-parker/

Volunteers outside the USA: Dorothy Parker died in 1967. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 50 years; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
LibriVox volunteers bring you -- recordings of Recurrence by Dorothy Parker.
This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for January 16, 2022.
-----
Dorothy Parker was an American poet, writer, critic, and satirist based in New York. She was best known for her wit, wisecracks, and eye for 20th-century urban foibles. This poem is taken from her book "Enough Rope" (1926), freshly out of US copyright. (Summary by TriciaG)
Each fortnight a poem is chosen to be recorded by as many LibriVox volunteers as possible!
This fortnight's poem can be found here.

New to recording? Please see our Newbie Guide to Recording for further instructions. A quick guide to our required technical settings can be found here. When you post your file, please tell the BC what name you would like to use in our catalog.

LibriVox recording settings: mono (1 channel), 44100 Hz sample rate, 128 kbps constant bit rate MP3. See the Tech Specs

Begin your reading with the abbreviated LibriVox disclaimer:
Leave 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning.
Recurrence by Dorothy Parker, read for librivox.org by [your name].
[Add, if you wish, date, and/or your location.]
Then read the poem:
We shall have our little day.
Take my hand and travel still
Round and round the little way,
Up and down the little hill.

It is good to love again;
Scan the renovated skies,
Dip and drive the idling pen,
Sweetly tint the paling lies.

Trace the dripping, piercèd heart,
Speak the fair, insistent verse,
Vow to God, and slip apart,
Little better, little worse.

Would we need not know before
How shall end this prettiness;
One of us must love the more,
One of us shall love the less.

Thus it is, and so it goes;
We shall have our day, my dear.
Where, unwilling, dies the rose
Buds the new, another year.
At the end of your reading, leave a space and then say:
End of poem. This recording is in the public domain.
Leave 5 seconds of silence at the end.

Got setup a year and a half ago, this is my first project, seemed like a nice way to dip in.

Nicely read! I like your interpretation.

Are you using Audacity? We need to get the volume up on this a bit, and I notice some wonky wave forms we can easily fix.

I don't know if the wave forms actually make the recording sound worse on good speakers. They might. But you can clean 'em up by selecting all, then going to Effect / High Pass Filter. Set it to 200 threshold and -12 dB rolloff. This will smooth out the wave forms a bit without affecting the recording (since the tones affected are lower than your voice).

Then we need to amplify by at leastt 7 dB, but can't because you've got some spikes that prevent that much amplification. So highlight all, then go to Effect/Limiter. Change "Limit (dB)" to -7 and run it. This will shrink your peaks.

Then run Effect/Amplify and set it to 7 or 8 dB - as much as it will let you.

While you're in there, please add 1 second of silence to the end. ;)

Thank you! Also nicely read. :)

If I may be picky, would you do this for me?

- Cut the breath at the very beginning (the beginning silence is a little long anyway - so cut out the first 1/2 second or so of silence)
- The silence after the poem and before "End of poem" feels really long to me. Please cut down to about... 2 seconds, maybe?
- And the final silence is a bit too short (about 2.5 seconds). Please add about 2.5 seconds to make it 5 total. :)

Fixed. I cleaned up some other breath noise too.

Ah thank you, I was trying to figure out how to cut the punch of the "s" sounds. I'll go through it again tonight. Thanks!

To cut down the S sounds a bit, experiment with the Low Pass Filter. Start at about 5000 or 6000 Hz and experiment from there. You can always Ctrl-Z to undo it if you don't like it. 8-)
