An Angler's Hours, by Hugh Tempest Sheringham (1879 - 1930)

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/anglers-hours-by-hugh-tempest-sheringham/
One of the classic British books about angling. The author’s love was fly fishing—“…while there are trout, life is worth living…” but he was no snob. An Angler’s Hours includes several chapters about coarse fishing (grayling, dace, chub, etc.) as well as a surprising account of the Japanese tenkara method as used in England.

Sheringham's style is similar to that of the much-loved B.B. (Denys Watkins-Pitchford) with a dash of P.G. Wodehouse. He doesn’t bore us with technical details but writes of the simple joys of angling—"a man who gazes at the wares in a tackle-shop on a sunny day in April has certainly a fishing expedition in prospect”—not forgetting the pleasure of a nice pot of tea at the end of the day.

Hugh Tempest Sheringham (1876 - 1930) was angling editor of The Field (London) and considered one of the premier British authors on freshwater angling both for his knowledge of the subject and readable style. (Summary by Adrian Praetzellis)

Hello Adrian, this sounds like an interesting project. I can MC this and will be back with a MW soon.

Do you already have a DPL lined up ? If not, I could volunteer for the job.

All right, MW is in place, ready to be filled out. It's not your first solo, (I listened to the Big Bow Mystery and enjoyed it immensely :9: ) so I guess you will have no problems with this.

Some chapters are a bit long, I wonder whether they need to be split in two. For that it's preferable to say "section" instead of "chapter" in the disclaimer, so I changed that. I guess now we are on the safe side in any case.

Looking forward to this.

Cool. Thanks Sonia.

The book is really a series of narratives about the process of angling. Not at all a technical, how-to manual. Very atmospheric, even philosophical in parts, and very British in a before-the-war sort of way. I hope you enjoy it.

Yes, two of the chapters are a bit long for editing ease... 29 pages = +/- 32 minutes. We'll see how it goes. I'd hate to chop up a chapter so i'll probably just soldier on.

I won't always be this quick to record. Was going to do some pruning... but it's raining up here.

oh yes I also prefer to keep chapters in one piece if possible. 32 minutes is not a problem, if you think that is the maximum. What I meant was that they exceed 74 minutes, that is our accepted maximum length. But you feel they won't be that long, so we're good here.

no problems, I am not in a hurry either :)

The first section is great so far, I like the funny/witty style of the author already, so I guess this will definitely not be a boring book. 8-) Your reading is also very easy to follow along, so all good here.

I have a couple of small notes for the intro and outro, it's only a cosmetic bit, but maybe mentioning it from the start is not bad. Let me know what you think:

> at 0:05: "by Hugh Tempest Sheringham" actually, in the very first section, the full intro doesn't require the author's name in the first mention of the book (see first example in the initial post)

> at 0:23: "by Hugh Tempest Sheringham" - here would be the correct spot to say the author's name. At this point you omit his middle name "Tempest". So if you cut the first part, it might be good to mention the full name in the second part of the intro

> at 6:20: "End of section 0" - you say "end of introductory". Consistently usually we end the same way than we open a chapter, so here you chose to go with "section"

This is all, inside the text proper, there was nothing to note. All perfect :)

Oh maybe it would be helpful to put the page numbers in the Notes sections, that way you and I can find the beginning quite easily while recording and PLing.

Thanks, we're off to a great start. I moved us to Going Solo.

Thanks Sonia. I'll fix and repost.

As each file will be a single chapter, can I introduce and conclude each with "Chapter X: chapter name" ? Same would go with the "Introductory."

Thanks.

I've just discovered that the Google scanned version I planned to read is missing some pages from Chapter 1.
Fortunately, archive.org has a complete copy of the same edition so I'll switch to that one:

ok yes sure, if you are sure none of the sections need to be split, then "chapter" will work just as well. It's only with split chapters that section makes it all cleaner. You can change it in the first post if you wish.

good you noticed right away....it seems to be the same year so I guess the text will be identical. I'll change the link in the database then.

"If PG Wodehouse had written about fishing, it would have looked like this." (Anon.) I wish I'd said that.

Here's the fixed version:

Hopefully I got it right this time... :)

sounds good to put in the summary. (is it public domain ?)
yes, sounds good like this. PL ok now.

I changed the intro wording in your first post, so we know how to proceed from now on. :)

Thanks, and have a good start in the weekend.

wow, this was a gripping chapter, Adrian. The fight to reel in the big carp at the end was awesomely well written (and narrated). I was holding my breath (actually, I will be always rooting for the fish in this book  ).

So far, I am not bored. The chapters are amusingly written. And I learn all the names of fish now. 8-)

This chapter is totally PL ok.

Thanks, and have a nice weekend

Chapter 2

I will be always rooting for the fish in this book
An angler needs a lot of patience to go after the wily carp. But unlike our author, I always release them back into the lake.

Chapter 2 was hilarious. Each time, he mentioned the unconquerable hope, I had to smirk. The author really knows how to make his topic appealing.

Absolutely PL ok, and narrated with the need tongue-in-cheek

thanks
