Joan Haste, by H. Rider Haggard (1856 - 1925)
A romantic melodrama and one of H. Rider Haggard's most poignant love stories. Joan Haste, a beautiful but illegitimate woman whose mother died when she was a few years old (and her father is unknown) is raised by her terrible, self-serving aunt and uncle. Joan meets navy Captain Henry Graves in the ruins of a crumbling church after Joan has spotted a jackdaw nest up on the wall of a falling-down bell tower and is unable to reach it. Henry, who is passing by and is immediately taken in by Joan, gallantly offers to climb up and get the baby birds, but ends up falling and breaking his leg. Joan is injured when she bravely tries to catch him to keep him from falling to his death on some iron spikes. They fall in love and here starts this haunting story.

Hi Tiffany,
You are a kindred soul.. I love his books too. This one is quite a bit different and is not packed full of drama and adventure but I am totally engrossed in this sad love story. Havn't finished it yet so won't comment further :D

Have you read Pearl Maiden? It has been a longtime favourite and this one sounds like it has a similar 'feel' as it is also a more serious one, following an often sad and difficult love story. But I like them as it is so much more than a love story as is true of all his books I have read! There is usually more too it than just a love story or adventure.

:help:
Please help! Is my pronounciation of "Bradmouth" OK or should it be changed to "Bradmith"?
Another one - Should "Levinger" be with the ng sound the way I pronounced it or with the j sound?
