The history of St. Dominic: founder of the Friars Preachers, by Augusta Theodosia Drane (1823-1894)

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/history-of-st-dominic-by-augusta-theodosia-drane/

This is an abandoned solo, to be finished by another reader.
“The Saint who ‘studied only in the book of charity,’ who was ‘the lover of souls,’ because he was ‘the friend of Jesus Christ,’ who is invoked as ‘the most kind Father, Dominic,’ distinguished even among the saints for his ‘matchless serenity,’ and for the tender love that flowed from him as from ‘a well-spring of sweetness,’ hated heresy out of the very fulness of his love for souls; and the word VERITAS, which has become the motto of his Order, was in his eyes but another form of the yet sweeter word CHARITAS. This truth, dimmed though it may have become in our own age and country, is the real key to the character of St. Dominic, and of all other Saints in whom this enmity to that which opposes the truth is an integral portion of their love of God; a Divine instinct, marking their allegiance to His Supreme Sovereignty, and one which can alone explain both their heroic labours in defence of the faith, and the tears they wept over souls perishing in error.”

OK, Your MW is set up.

For a solo project, you are the Book Coordinator. That means you fill out the Magic Window and post your links and times in the window when you upload your files.

You'll need to start by logging into the magic window. Instructions are in the BC How-to; and this is a more detailed version of the First Login instructions (with pictures!) Please be sure to read all of the BC How To document, as that will give you more information on your role as a BC.

Note that passwords for the magic window and the forum are not connected. You can use the same password in both places (I think a lot of people do), but if you change it on one system, it won't affect the password on the other system.

Next, you'll need to start entering section (or chapter) titles. I've entered the first couple to get you started.

Then you are ready to start recording. When you upload a section, it's your responsibility to add the link and duration (mm:ss) to the Magic Window. Link from the uploader goes in the "listen URL" column, duration goes in the "notes" column. Then be sure to post in the thread that a new section is ready for PL so your DPL knows there is something new.

We won't worry about a DPL just yet - folks often see new projects and volunteer to listen before anything is posted. If no one sees this, we will advertise once you have a section or two ready to listen to.

If you have questions, or if you have any trouble with the instructions in the BC how to, please post and we'll work through it together.

Hi MaryAnn,
Here is my first installment. I hope I have followed all the directions and apologize in advance if I messed up.

This is my first time doing any type of audio recording. I would gladly accept any feedback be it performance or technical, from anyone.

Best,

There are only a few things... you did extremely well for this being your first audio recording!
First, there is a 5 second pause at 0:34 in the recording, right after you announce the chapter title. You should probably take out the pause so that it transitions smoothly into the chapter content.
Third, at 2:34 in the recording, you repeat a phrase, and you hear a loud click; maybe try the click removal on audacity, and take out the repeat.
Lastly, around 21:40, a dog starts barking; maybe you could try to use the noise reduction on audactiy, or something like that, to take it out.
Just reupload it when you finish editing! You did good for a first recording!

I think I found the correct thread and here is the French poem, ready for insertion :) If you need any more French, let me know, via PM best. This project looks like it may have more of this. ;) I can also help in German, Latin and Italian.

Recording time: 0:30 min.

I will be on vacation from Wednesday 27 March till Sunday 14 April
and unable to PL during that time. Thank you for your patience.

Hi MozartJr,

I addressed the three items you mentioned in your post on Chapter 1. My concern is that I'm not sure I've fixed the dog bark. I don't have headphones and although I did hear something (dog) I'm not sure how long it continued for. I did another noise reduction but beyond that I'm not sure what I can/should do.

Chapter 2 coming very soon.

MozartJr,

I have finished with Chapter 2 thanks to Kitty's help!!!

https://librivox.org/uploads/maryannspiegel/stdominic_02_drane_128kb.mp3

I will say this...I don't think I like this particular chapter recording so please don't go easy on me. It felt very chopped up because I had to spend so much time learning and practicing a lot of French words that I probably still butchered.

Hello Oremus,
Chapter 1 is now PL OK!
Don't worry about the dog; it's fine if you couldn't take it out. It's better now, anyway, from what you did.
I will PL Chapter 2 shortly!

Hi Mary Ann,
Oremus hasn't been on here since August 16th... If you open it up to other readers, I'm still willing to be PL! (Maybe I'll even read a section :D ) I don't know if you were planning on posting it on readers wanted, but just wanted to mention that if you do, I'm still here to be PL!
