"Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines", by Clyde Fitch (1865 - 1909)
Captain Robert Jinks has formed a marching band with some friends to promote a political candidate, earning him the moniker "Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines". When they discover that opera diva Madame Trentoni is arriving from Europe, Jinks and his buddies go down to the dock to welcome her. Jinks bets his pals a large sum that he can romance her, but when Jinks finally encounters Madame Trentoni, he is so taken by her that he immediately concedes the bet and gives his friends his IOU for the wager money so he can court her without what he now sees as an unseemly wager.

Romance blossoms between Jinks and the opera diva, that is until that IOU resurfaces at a most inconvenient moment...

I'm looking through the script now, and considering volunteering for Captain Jinks. Before doing that, I have a question. For the parts where characters sing or whistle specific tunes, are actors supposed to look those up and include them, or not?

Hi Alan!

We generally don’t sing any songs in these Librivox plays projects. If there are verses provided in the script, the usual procedure is to recite them as you would a poem (Todd calls it “chanting”).

As I recall, the song in question in the script is the same as the play’s title, and the Stage Directions simply state that the characters enter singing/whistling etc. We have a reader read all the stage directions as a designated voice-part role and their statement to the effect that the singing is occurring will be sufficient.

So short version, no singing is involved.

May I go ahead and sign you up for the Captain Jinks role?

Cheers,
Chris
