The Shipwreck, by William Falconer (1732 - 1769)

This project is now complete.  All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/the-shipwreck-by-william-falconer/

A semi-autobiographical poem in three cantos recounts the wreck of the merchant ship Britannia. Written by William Falconer, a seaman of some experience, who survived one shipwreck himself with only two others of the 50 man crew and eventually perished in the loss of a second ship, the frigate Aurora, 20 years later. The poem is recognized for its realistic portrayal of life aboard an 18th century sailing vessel. (Summary by Fritz)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

A couple notes for the future MC/BC -

The arguments at the beginning of each canto and the footnotes will not be read.

The "Memoir of Falconer" at the beginning was written by Robert Carruthers, but only vaguely referenced on the title page. My thought is to say "Memoirs of Falconer by Robert Carruthers" at the beginning of that section to give credit where credit is due. The Memoir runs on for 30 pages so my intent at this point is to split it into 2 pieces, maybe 3 if I get worn out sooner.

Falconer splits the cantos into four or five sections. I will follow his lead and read each part as a separate section.

Section 1 ready for PL.

I was considering doing the whole memoir in one shot, but now am glad I broke it into two parts. Together they may not meet the LV time limit. This part is 30 minutes and the next is a couple of pages longer so it would be close.

Hopefully listeners will find this interesting enough to make the effort worthwhile. It includes bits of some of Falconer's other poems and provides a lot of background to his life, but may be too much for people who are just interested in the poem itself.

Section 2 is PL OK and I am totally psyched for the poem now! This introduction (and your reading!) was very good at building anticipation!
