Greek Literature, by Henry Julius Wetenhall Tillyard (1881 - 1968)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/greek-literature-by-hjw-tillyard/

Volunteers outside the USA: Henry Julius Wetenhall Tillyard died in 1968. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 50 years; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
"The Greeks were the most intellectual people of the old world. … The study of Greek literature is therefore a proper element in a liberal education. The Greek language, naturally flexible and rich in poetical words, becomes in the hands of the great writers a medium of unequalled force, clearness, and adaptability, able to express as well the highest aspirations of the poet as the subtlest shades of philosophical argument or the most abstruse technicalities. The books of Greece have passed the critical selection of the ages, and the student, unencumbered by masses of inferior material, can approach the works of acknowledged masters, the true fountain-head of European culture." (From the Introduction)
Note to Readers: Please omit the bibliographies given at the end of each chapter. Also note that the abbreviation fl. c. is used frequently in this work. It means the approximate time during which an author was active, and should be read as "floruit circa."

If you would like some guidance on how to pronounce the Greek names, you should be able to find recordings of most of them at http://www.howjsay.com/

Open for readers and a DPL! This looks to be a very approachable overview of Greek literature, requiring no knowledge of Greek.

Welcome to LibriVox! I will be happy to assign you this section. :) What name would you like to use in the catalogue? It can be your real name, your screen name, or some other pseudonym.

You mentioned in another post that you're looking into doing your test recording. That is the perfect next step! I suppose this may already be the page you're reading, but if not, this is a good one to check out: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=1-Minute_Test Please let me know if you need some clarification on anything there.

The first post of every project will inform you of what the deadline for that project is. In general, we ask that our volunteers submit their recordings within two months of the date of claiming. But you should always check the first post of a project thread to be sure, as some of them have shorter deadlines.

Again, welcome! There can be a lot to absorb at first, but we're happy to help you along. I hope you enjoy your time here!

I would like to claim it under the name of tijiva. On the one minute test, shpuld get it done later tomorrow. I am working on a Mac with GB and the raw output seems to be lower. Just working out some of the technical kinks.

Sounds good! Let me know how it goes!

I will warn you that GarageBand has been difficult for many of our readers to use. And for some time now, it has been unable to output a file with the required settings. As far as I know, that's still the case, but there may have been a new version that can do it, I suppose. My information may not be up to date.

I think that some Mac users have been unable to get Audacity as an alternative, but one volunteer made a video demonstrating TwistedWave for iOS, so it might be an option for Macs as well? https://youtu.be/6qG6zUTYfbc

Good luck!

Thank you, I'm happy to sign you up! So sorry that it took a couple of days to get back to you. I must have overlooked this project the last time I did my updating.

How would you like to be credited in the catalogue? You can use your real name, forum name, or some other pseudonym. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help you get started!

Thank you! I appreciate it, although I haven't been able to look at it myself. I do see, though, that there are some required edits you need to do before the test is given the green light. Please take care of those, and post the new test in the same topic you have, over in Listeners Wanted. And then let me know when you get the all clear!

Hello Emily... Er, Amy??? :hmm:  Hello!

I'm happy to sign you up, thank you! Another reader has already claimed the chapter on Comedy a few posts up, and I was tardy in updating the MW to reflect that. But I'd love for you to read about Tragedy!
