The Cambridge Modern History. Volume 03, The Wars of Religion, by Various
The Cambridge Modern History is a universal history covering the period from 1450 to 1910. It was published in 14 volumes between 1902 and 1912. The series was planned by Lord Acton, who intended it to be a monument of objective, collaborative scholarship, and edited by A.W. Ward, G. W. Prothero and Stanley Leathes.

From the preface: "The present volume, as its title imports, relates a complicated series of conflicts of which the origin or the pretext has for the most part to be sought in the great religious schism with which the preceding volume was concerned. But the cause of the restoration of Catholic unity in the West was, in the minds of both the supporters and the opponents of that cause, inextricably interwoven with the purposes of dynastic ambition, and powerfully affected by the influences traceable to the rapid advance of the monarchical principle and to the gradual growth of the conception of the modern national State." Great, thanks! Since you didn't mention which two sections you were interested in, I've assigned you the first two (of three). If you'd like to change your claim, let me know.

Michael,

That sounds like a plan. IF I can finish the two sections in relatively short order (a couple of weeks), I'd be willing to take on the last section of that Chapter, also. If it hasn't been claimed by then. Let me see how quickly I can proceed.

Thanks much.

Take care,

John

Hi John

Our expectations regarding timelines are explained in the first post above, under the heading "Deadline". Everyone is welcome to take up to two months to complete their claims. Of course, everyone is also welcome to expedite the process as much as they like. :)

Thanks,
Michael

Please put me down for section 38. I’d love to do the whole chapter, but I can’t commit to more than one section at a time. I’ve read a lot about Sidney Lee in connection with his biographical researches into
Shakespeare, but apart from those have read nothing by him.

This is off topic, but if anyone is interested in the subject of Shakespeare biography, I highly recommend the book “Shakespeare’s Lives” by S Schoenbaum. It’s a kind of biography of the biographers, Lee among them.

Thanks! Since you'd like to read the whole chapter, let's just sign you up for it. The second part is shorter than usual. If you don't manage to complete it within 2 months, just write here to ask for an extension.

Some of the parts of this one are definitely not meant to be read aloud  (esp. some seriously long embedded sentences).

Thank you, Piotrek! Interesting... The editors of the series made a somewhat usual decision not to allow any footnotes. I wonder if this author just inserted all his footnotes into the text. :)
