The Orphan, by Clarence Edward Mulford (1883 - 1956)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-orphan-by-clarence-edward-mulford/

Volunteers outside the USA: Clarence Edward Mulford died in 1956. This person's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years; in Canada it is 50 years; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.
Many men swore that The Orphan was bad, and many swore profanely and with wonderful command of epithets because he was bad, but for obvious reasons that was as far as the majority went to show their displeasure. Those of the minority who had gone farther and who had shown their hatred by rash actions only proved their foolishness; for they had indeed gone far and would return no more. But Sheriff Jim Shields is tracking The Orphan, wanted for the murder of sheepherders, and won’t stop until he brings the bad man to justice.
Often billed as the second book in Clarence Mulford’s Hopalong Cassidy series, Hoppy doesn’t appear in this one, but it’s still as rip-roaring a western as you’ll ever see. (Summary by sjmarky)

Prooflistening level: Standard
Prospective PLs, please see the Guide for Proof-listeners.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the number of languishing projects on our server, we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't recorded anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process unless you are the BC or PL. Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Nope. I’m happy to have anybody willing, including newbies.

Welcome aboard, pardner (I don’t actually know if my characters talk like that, but you know, it’s thematic). The link to the PLers guide is near the top of the first post.

Welcome! As Mark said, the guide for Proof Listeners is linked in the first post, so you should read up on that to know what kinds of things you should be listening for.

I'm giving you access to the MW (magic window). You'll need to create a password the first time you log in to this system. (It's a different system with a different name/password from the forum login.) Here is some info on using the Magic Window: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Soloists:_How_to_update_the_Magic_Window Most of the information on this page you can ignore, as it will be Mark's responsibility. What you will need to pay attention to are steps 2-4 and step 6.3 (Changing the status of a section). After you listen to a section, you'll post your comments in this thread as well as updating the status of the section to either "PL ok" or "See PL notes."

In order to set you up as DPL, I also created your catalogue page: https://librivox.org/reader/15786 I used your forum name as the catalogue name as well, but if you want to change that to your real name or to some other pseudonym, I can take care of that for you, just let me know. If you click on "Reader section details," you'll see a breakdown of all the sections you are currently assigned, either to read (none yet) or to PL. This page is very useful to help you keep track of your commitments if you become involved in multiple projects at the same time. :)

If you have any questions about something I've said, or about something else you've seen that puzzles you, I'm happy to help!

Is solowesterntheorphanbyclarenceemulford_01_mulford_128kb.mp3 really the file name? Not orphan_xx_mulford_128kb.mp3?

 I didn't notice that! The sample file name is automatically generated based on what you enter as the title in the template. Since you entered "[SOLO WESTERN] The Orphan, by Clarence Edward Mulford" instead of just the title, that is what populated. But you can always change this by editing the first post. I'll often edit it for very long titles anyway. So, yes, I think you should use your suggested format above. :D

Edit: To be clear, I mean the template to generate the code. The subject line when you then post that code is a completely different thing. In this case, you entered exactly the same text for both, whereas the template should have had just the title without the extra stuff.

By the way, are you planning on filling in the section titles before you get started, or as you go along? (I prefer the former, but it's basically up to you on a solo.) If you don't plan to fill them in yet, then I can go ahead and move us to Going Solo.

I'll fill them all in before I start recording. In fact, I think I'll do it now.
