Mr Carnaby Leete is a politician whose career is in trouble. He needs to save his position by marrying his youngest daughter, Ann advantageously. His only son has married beneath him, and his older daughter's politically brilliant marriage is now in serious trouble. The play has uses symbolism to give weight to the comedy and poses questions about the wisdom of marrying of a daughter solely for political gain. (Summary by Tchaikovsky)
