On Famine Fever and Some of the Other Cognate Forms of Typhus, by Rudolf Virchow (1821 - 1902)

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on the catalog page here:
https://librivox.org/on-famine-fever-by-rudolf-virchow/

Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902), professor of medicine and pathology at the Charité Hospital in Berlin, published more than 2000 papers and dozens of books. His investigation of the 1847-1848 typhus epidemic in Upper Silesia laid the foundations of public health in Germany. Duriing the Revolution of 1848, Virchow helped found a journal promoting medicine as a social science. For physicians, his contributions to the understanding of the pathophysiology of disease and to the working vocabulary of medicine were fundamental, but Virchow also believed that social injustice and political oppression lay at the heart of many illnesses and that "the physician is the natural attorney of the poor." Hi Erin,

Section 1 is up:

23:32

https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/onfaminefever_01_virchow_128kb.mp3

In this section Virchow delineates two distinct infections: typhoid fever (caused by Salmonella typhi) and typhus (caused by Rickettsia prowazekii). Of course, the discovery of the infectious agents lay in the future, but the clinical and pathological features allowed them to be distinguished. Typhoid is transmitted by contaminated water and by human carriers. Typhus by body lice.

Thanks for taking on this project!

Hi Pam,

I learn so much working with you. I was hoping you would add your own notes to this project as we went along, and you haven't disappointed.

20.32-20.37, p 10 bottom first para
...11,900 died, i. e. almost 20 per cent.
Could you listen back to the first number? I’m hearing two distinct figures.
Off LV 25-28 March.

Hi Pam,

Sections 1 and 2 are PL OK. I wasn't expecting him to bring a form of climate science into it. This is remarkable.

Hi Pam,

Section 3 is PL OK. His detective work is more fascinating than actual detective novels.

Some of the throwaway remarks he makes about sicknesses like scarlet fever and measles are so sobering. I'm lucky to be living now.

Hi Erin,

Thanks!

Yes, it's sobering.

What he needed for typhus was delousing powder, tetracycline, and, of course, food.
