Candle-Lightin' Time by Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872 - 1906).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/candle-lightin-time-by-paul-laurence-dunbar/
African American Southern Life ( Denise Ray)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/candlelightintim00dunb/page/n17/mode/2up
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This is set up.

As you're the soloist, you're in charge of updating the Magic Window.

Detailed Instructions for accessing the Magic Window can be found in the document linked here: Instructions for Soloists

Video showing how to use the Magic Window (read the above document first - it has the information on how to log in for the first time, which this does not have):
Magic Windows / Section Compiler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOP4tcr1kl8

I've entered the first two chapters for you as an example. You can fill in the rest.

When you upload a chapter, put the file duration (mm:ss) in the Notes field and the uploaded URL into the Listen URL field, and mark it from Assigned to Ready for PL.

Hi Tricia
Here is my first recording for Candle-Lightin'Time- Dinah Kneading Dough.

https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/candlelightintime_01_dunbar_128kb.mp3 Duration1:53

Since this is my first solo reading: Is it better to complete all the readings to get a proof listener or try to obtain one now?

I see you've gotten it into the Magic Window. Be sure to mark the status (last column) as "Ready for PL".

That's partly up to you. We could start advertising now, or we can wait a bit. I wouldn't wait until they were all in, as you probably would rather edit mistakes closer to when you recorded them originally (maybe). :) Me, I'd maybe wait until there were 5 or 10 up, if they are all this short.

To advertise, take this template and put the correct info into it. Then post it over in Listeners & Editors Wanted.

Hi Tricia G
I have been trying to upload section 5 and I keep getting the following error:Syntax error unexpected token< in JSON at position O. What does this mean. I re entered the title several times and resaved the file by redoing the title. Please help! I want to also advertise for a proof listener.

I don't have time to look into it - dinner, then we have an appointment right afterwards. Can you post your question in the Need Help? Got Advice? forum? :)

I'll help with the DPL request later tonight (after 9:00 Eastern time)

Okay, I'm back. That error means that the login timed out. Refresh the screen and log in again, then upload the file.

Regarding advertising: either you or I can do it. If you want to, go here and follow the instructions: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/ProofListening_Template

Or I can do it for you if you prefer. Let me know. :)

If the reader is comfortable with a dialect recording, I will be happy to serve as DPL.

Thanks for posting the template for PL. I have someone who is willing to be the DPL. I didn't realize you can get a DPL so quickly. I was able to post section 5.

Sections one through five PL OK!

Really a wonderful performance of these poems!

My favorite so far is the 'Old Front Gate.'

EDIT: I updated the time for Section 3 to 3:00.
