Miles Gloriosus; The Braggart Captain by Titus Maccius Plautus (254 BCE - 184 BCE). Translated by Henry Thomas Riley (1816 - 1878)

Pleusicles loves Philocomasium, but she is kidnapped by Pyrgopolinices. Palaestrio, faithful servant to Pleusicles, witnesses this and goes to tell his master, but is captured by Pirates and ends up a servant to Pyrgopolinices as well. Palaestrio still gets word to Pleusicles, who arrives on scene. Palaestrio then invents a complex and daring plan involving mistresses, supposed twin sisters, disguises, family friends in the right places, and a monkey to try to escape Pyrgopolinices and reunite Pleusicles and Philocomasium. (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is based on this and two other Plautus plays.) ( ToddHW)
  • With Trinummus almost complete, time for another Plautus play to start. Hope you enjoy the summary above.

Let me start by saying The Names Are Not As Hard As They Look! Just pronounce them syllable by syllable. Ple-u-si-cles. Phil-o-com-a-si-um. Pyr-go-po-lin-i-cles. Etc. (There actually are some characters whose names do not start with "P".)

And no, I don't know where the accents go. But fortunately for you, our wonderful DPL will be Acroteleutium - er, Kitty - who knows all.

    Gender neutral, of course.

This project is complete. Audio files can be found on our catalog page at https://librivox.org/miles-gloriosus-the-braggart-captain-by-titus-maccius-plautus/

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/comediesofplautu01plauiala/page/67/mode/1up
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi Todd, I’d like to play Philocomasium. I haven’t read a play by Plautus since I was about 15, so this ought to be a fun flashback! :)

Artotrogus please 😺

I could also do Lucrio (Act 3) and/or Cario (Act 5) but you may prefer to keep those open for now :hmm:

Honestly, with names like this, these guys' drivers licences must be longer than their chariots.

Pyrgopolinices, if you please, Todd. The "much-conquering tower"? He doesn't half think he's "it-on-a-stick", as my wife says. He's apparently a pirate captain, so you know what's coming I figure, Todd?

Cheers,
Chris

Yay, more Plautus! May I play Palæstrio?

I apologize in advance for brutally mispronouncing everyone's names.

You are not mispronouncing names. You are assuming a specific accent in which the names sound unique. (So long as you are consistent in your name uniqueness throughout your files.)

Thanks, Todd
