The Idea of Progress: An Inquiry into Its Origin and Growth by John Bagnell Bury (1861 - 1927).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/the-idea-of-progress-by-john-bagnell-bury/

John Bagnell Bury was Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University in the early twentieth century. In The Idea of Progress, he assesses the concepts of history found in the classical period and then traces the historical development of the concept of political and social progress by looking at writers from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. It is interesting to consider what the history of the past hundred years would add to such an analysis. ( Barry Ganong)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/b29981311/page/n9/mode/2up
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thanks, Jo!

I have three questions.

First, could the sections be numbered 01-23 instead of 00-22 in the MW? After the Preface (section 01) is an Introduction (which will be two sections) before chapter 1 begins, and I will split one of the other chapters into two sections. So there's no point in trying to make section numbers follow chapter numbers, and they might as well begin with 01.

Second, and following on that, I'd like to record my intros as "Section one of The Idea of Progress by J. B. Bury; [Librivox notice]"; and then (for example) "Introduction, part one." I would use the full title, with subtitle, in the first intro and the last outro, the shorter title otherwise.

Third, could you change the URL for the text? I thought it might be simpler just to use the Gutenberg text, but was dismayed to see that, for example, on page 17 where the PDF presents a Greek phrase, the Gutenberg text just has (words in Greek). Eek! An URL for the book, with access to the PDF that I will use to record, is:

https://archive.org/details/b29981311/page/n17/mode/2up

Thanks again!

Hi Barry,

I've changed the section numbering to start from 1 as requested.

Please review the edited intros and outros in the top post. I think I have them as you are suggesting which is fine.

URL for the text changed to the archive.org scan.

Thanks much, Cheryl, but Larry Wilson is already on board for it.

Welcome, Larry! Here's section 01 (5:40):

https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/ideaofprogress_01_bury_128kb.mp3

It's short, but there didn't seem to be any non-awkward way to merge it with the next section.

Good time away, but short.
Back in the thick of things - remotely.

All chapters through 5 are PL OK.
