The Wonder! A Woman Keeps a Secret by Susannah Centlivre (1680 - 1723). Translated by Augustin Daly (1838 - 1899)
Donna Isabella does not want to marry Don Guzman, her father's choice. Donna Violante's father wants her to become a nun. Isabella is attacked on the street and carried insensible into Violante's house. What will happen next? Confidential letters, secret identities, conniving servants, disguises and other fallderoll await! Supposedly Jane Austen put on a family performance of this play. (This is a "reduced and rearranged" version from 1893 edited by Augustine Daly from the original 1714 play by Susannah Centlivre.)
( ToddHW)
- I am taking a Jane Austen course where it it was mentioned that Jane put on this play so of course I have to offer it. (I'd probably get a better grade if we finished this into the catalog by the end of the class, but that won't happen.) Susannah was a very successful and prolific woman playwright from the early 1700s, writing at the same time and sharing applause, theaters, and casts with Farquhar, Steele, and others of the time. I could not find a legible copy of the original play, but this "reduced and rearranged" 1893 version saves you all from the funny "f's as s's" of the 1700s.
Gender neutral, of course.
Kitty will be DPL and one of the conniving servants; I will be another of them. The rest of you better watch out or we might lead your love letters astray, serve you cold tea, or lay a smoky fire in your room.
- Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
- How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
- New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
- Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/twooldcomediesb00hangoog/page/n65/mode/1up
- Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.
If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I won't look as ridiculous as the Prince Regent did when he wore one

It is what you wear under it that matters

The Preface to this text has an interesting bit about her life. One of the few female playwrights of that time to achieve popular success, even if Byron was scathing about her (but then he was scathing about everybody)

well Gibby has to prepare the audience gently for his accent

otherwise they would flee the theatre screaming.
A short part, but funnily done

looking forward to the next acts

thank you Alan.
