The Double Dealer by William Congreve (1670 - 1729).

"This remarkable melodrama [The Double Dealer] - for a comedy it can scarcely be called... Is it possible to imagine a more inextricable tangle? No human brain can keep the threads clear for two consecutive minutes.... What wonder if audiences were at first baffled and fatigued by the effort to follow the outs and ins of this Labyrinthine plot. Well may Lord Touchwood say: 'I am confounded when I look back, and want a clue to guide me through the various mazes of unheard-of treachery.' " ( William Archer, editor, 1912)
  • This play is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-double-dealer-by-william-congreve/

Another Congreve, a tangled mess of, well, dealing and double dealing; Probably even some triple dealing thrown in for good measure. Gender neutral of course just to ensure everything is thoroughly mixed up.

I will attempt yet again to play a character vainly trying to control errant wife Kitty; hopefully she will take some time off from her various dalliances to be your ever faithful DPL.

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1191
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Can I please claim Mellefont?

This one looks good. Two going after the lady, one is evil, the other promised to take her hand. Who gets her?

Intriguing! If it's that confusing to watch, imagine how it will be for dear Kitty, hearing everything out of order!

I'll play Lady Froth, please.

thanks for claiming !

I am used to hearing things out of order. My brain somehow stores it away and rearranges it all in order  (but I am always amazed at how cool we all sound together in the end when I hear the final result)

DPL list updated, and yes, I am looking forward to bossing around my long-suffering husband, as long as he wants (or can) keep up with me.

If someone will give me the correct pronunciation of "qui vult decipi decipiatur", I wouldn't mind playing the villain Maskwell.

With the work at my DC starting to wind back to pre-coronavirus levels ... this coming week will be the first consisting of less than six working days in some time ... I hope to get my backlog all recorded.

Cheers,
Chris

kwee vult day-chee-pee day-chee-pee-ah-tour is my guess. But hey, you're the villain. You get to mange the language as badly as you would mange somebody who tried to thwart your nefarious plans!

DC? District constabulary? As in "A Policeman's lot is not a happy one"? Does not seem compatible with successful evil villainhood....

Thanks, Todd

Me? A police officer?! Did I just cause you to search your conscience, Todd?

No, I'm not a policeman. DC stands for "Distribution Centre". Truck Driver, Turret Driver and sometime Storeman.

BTW, they're called PACs and PDs in New South Wales ("Police Area Command" and "Police District").
