Weird Tales, Volume 1 by E. T. A. (Ernst Theodor Amadeus) Hoffmann (1776 - 1822). Translated by J. T. (John Thomas) Bealby (1858 - 1944)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/weird-tales-volume-1-by-e-t-a-hoffmann/

These stories form the first volume of the renowned Tales of Hoffman. Three of them served as the basis for Offenbach's opera by that name, and another inspired Tchaikowsky's Nutcracker. The stories are fantasies with elements of the supernatural—quintessential Romanticism. ( T. A. Copeland)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/31377
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This is set up.

I shortened the file name slightly and took out the full names of the author and translator out of the intro/outro wording. This is all stuff you probably would have done, anyway. :)

We'll wait in the Launch Pad a couple days to see if we can pick up a DPL.

Fine, and thanks. Looking back on the summary, I realize that it is misleading, and I will want to revise it eventually. The reference to the opera and the ballet the book inspired does not apply to volume 1 but rather to volume 2. We can deal with this later, though.

Yep. Just don't wait until the very last minute. I have a habit of starting cataloging quickly after the last section is PL'd. When you do change it, please post in the thread that you've done so - or just post the new intro into a post rather than editing the top post. That way I'll see and remember. :)

Will do. The first three parts are uploaded: https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/weirdtales1_1_hoffmann_128kb.mp3, https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/weirdtales1_2_hoffmann_128kb.mp3, and

Section 1:
As this is the first section of the book, after "Recording by [your name]" you should include the title of the book and author again:
' Recording by [your name]... Wierd Tales, Volume 1, by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Translated by J.T.Bealby. Part one of The Cremona Violin...'
17:22 : repeated phrase, "A young man."

Section 2: PL OK
Section 3: PL OK

This is a very interesting set of tales. I would not mind continuing to PL for this project if you still have need of a DPL.

Take care,
~Bill

"Signor Formica," Part 2 can be found here: https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/weirdtales1_5_hoffmann_128kb.mp3. Oddly, although Parts 1 and 2 both have a volume of 92.0 according to Checker, Part 1 "Failed" because it was too loud, while Part 2 "Passed." I don't intend to change either one for volume.

On the other hand, I am not happy with the noise reduction; it has caused final consonants to become inaudible here and there. I will fix any such words if you think they are problems, Bill.

Forcibly house-bound, I have sought liberation in art, and Part 3 of "Signor Formica" is uploaded: https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/weirdtales1_6_hoffmann_128kb.mp3.
