The Push Of A Finger by Alfred Bester (1913 - 1987).

This project can be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/the-push-of-a-finger-by-alfred-bester/
Science fiction from the 50s by one of the masters, Alfred Bester. Society has committed itself to complete stability. Nothing is allowed to upset this stability, nothing that is not planned and approved and accounted for in advance. Yes, this is hard to imagine but this has produced decades, nay, centuries of predictable prosperity and peace. Even the newspapers have very little to write about. One reporter however is curious about the "Prog" building, where pronouncements are issued every day just as Moses issued the commandments. Everyone is locked out of course but he wants to know more, he wants in by any means and the results of that obsession are more far reaching than anyone can imagine. What would happen if just a tiny push with a finger to a critical element is made at the very beginning of a process? A little nudge that sends it in a completely different direction? Hmmm? - Summary by philc . ( philc)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/61551
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Part 1 is PL OK. There is a capital in the file name.

DPL note: Part 2 begins with "Sure I did. I also shouted: "Stability is all wrong! I'm for Chaos. Hurray for Chaos!" and a lot more like that"

Loved the "wheetledy-woodeldey-weedledy". Part 2 is PL OK. You ended that one on a great cliff hanger.

DPL Note: Part 3 starts with: "And now, a warning. When we have set up our spacial partition membrane and begun the osmotic transfer of energy from hyperspace to our own there may be effects which I have been unable to predict.

Section three is up. :D

Sect ion 4 will start with "Yarr raged with impotent fury. He said: "It's absolutely aggravating. Here we follow the chain back to less than a half century from today and we're blocked—" He picked up a small desk phone and called upstairs to the data floors. "Hullo, Cullen? Get me all available data on the name FitzJohn. FitzJOHN. What's the matter, you deaf? F-I-T-Z ... That's right. Be quick about it."

I had it broken down for myself on seperate pages, but I did not think about the poor DPL who must find the starting spot.

Technically it’s standard pl so I don’t need it but I do tend to follow along. It seems to hold my mind which tends to wonder a LOT these days.

The pictures make it really easy to find my place for the next section.

Part 4 is up and I have fixed the repeat in part 3.
No spoilers but an ingenious story with a wry ending. Well, I  won't say more.
