Broken Hearts by W. S. Gilbert (1836 - 1911).

Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan fame also wrote non-musical plays without Sullivan as a partner. Here is a dramatic play far afield from the comedy musicals we often think of when we hear Gilbert's name: Prince Florian of Spain arrives on The Island of Broken Hearts, peopled by "we maidens all (save one [their dwarf protector]) [who] have dearly loved, and those we loved have died. We, broken hearts, knit by the sympathy of kindred woe, have sought this isle far from the ken of man; and having loved, and having lost our loves, stand pledged to love no living thing again." Fairies and magic lead to self-understanding, showing that Gilbert can well handle more serious material than you may think. ( ToddHW)
  • Not a happy play - this is not what you'd expect from Gilbert. Kitty will try to keep our spirits up with her fabulous DPL work.
Gender neutral, though it is a small cast.

This play is complete. All audio files may be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/broken-hearts-by-w-s-gilbert/

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/OriginalPlays/page/n9
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

no rest for the wicked, I see.

Ok, getting this on my DPL list and I'll try the role of Hilda this time. Though I may need a bit of time for this role.

All I can say in its defense is that it is a shorter play than the Pinero Big Drum. Oh, and there are 6 more Gilberts in the same book.

Nah, there have been Shakespeare-in-a-week projects. Still that was admirable for such a big work!

Thanks, Todd

In Chancery was pretty quick. 2 months and a week. But it was about a third of Big Drum.

Thanks, Todd

Looks like Prince Florian is the only man left, so I'd like to play him. :)

(I know I have older claims; they'll be handed in very soon)

What a strange and lovely little play!

Well, Vavir is a perfect ingenue, so ... can I claim Melusine? :)

Nothing wrong with man playing woman; we have the opposite (woman playing man) happening here often, I've played a woman or two, and has anyone missed SonoftheExiles as the parlourmaid in Pineros "Playgoer's"?

Thanks, Todd
