The Old Bachelor by William Congreve (1670 - 1729).

"In The Old Bachelor we have three or four concurrent plots, which become interwoven, indeed, at the end.... It is recorded that the successive unmasking of four beautiful women gave the audience such delight that they burst into a thunder of applause.

"Here, then, was a play compounded of quite familiar elements, and attempting nothing in the least new or ambitious in technic.... But each of the actions was clear, spirited, and suited to the taste of the day; and the familiarity of the material was redeemed by the novel vivacity of the author's wit."
( William Archer, editor, 1912)

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1192
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Can I claim Setter, a pimp?

I am surprised that Sonia is playing the wife of Fondlewife :hmm:
Who will be Fondlewife?

Sonia was looking for a challenge, methinks, in playing the unfaithful hussy Laetitia Fondlewife. Fondlewife himself is as yet unidentified.

Uh, well, um . . . . would it be too improper to ask to play Mr. Fondlewife? Such outrageous scenes he has with quite a range of emotions. As long as I don't get my face slapped, and we can fake the kiss . . . .

How bohemian! How fin de siècle!

I’d like to play the Music Master, though I’m not entirely sure which are all of his lines.

The act 3 scene 10 lines are not labeled in the script, but they are right at the very beginning of that scene. From the dialog that follows I am guessing that the music master says them.

All other music master lines are labeled where they appear.

first in ! Here is Laetitia Fondlewife, who doesn't take marital faithfulness too seriously. I had fun playing this role because she is so often switching between asides and speaking aloud and changes her character each time. A challenge I absolutely like.

Hope you like the outcome, Todd.

Wonderful performance! PL OK and then some.

For the benefit of those who simply can not wait until the release of the play to find out how the saintly Kitty plays the part of a, well, hussy, let me synopsize thus.

We start with dripping sarcasm to her husband in
"Well, be as cruel as you can to me, I’ll pray for you; and when I am dead with grief, may you have one that will love you as well as I have done: I shall be contented to lie at peace in my cold grave—since it will please you."
And then to a, er, mysterious stranger:
"’Tis impossible he should be mistaken after all this. A handsome fellow if he had not surprised me. Methinks, now I look on him again, I would not have him mistaken."
And when discovered:
"I’m so distracted, I can’t think of a lie."

Hah! This is followed by
"In the name of the—O! Good, my dear, don’t come near it; I’m afraid ’tis the devil; indeed, it has hoofs, dear."
Yeah, right....

Finally:
"Oh, my heart will break. [Seeming to faint.]"
I will be laughing for a week.

Thanks, Todd

 you are giving away all the spoilers of my role now. I actually deplored the fact that she only appeared in one act. I could have gone on with this...
And when discovered:
"I’m so distracted, I can’t think of a lie."
 I simply LOVED that line. I had to laugh out loud the first time I said it (this got cropped on the cutting floor). I hope you cannot hear out any smirks anymore. It's hard to stay serious with so much hypocrisy.

My second favourite line was "Pray heaven it be a prayer book"
I will be laughing for a week.
well I'm glad I could please. 8-) thank you for the nice review, Todd. :9: And maybe I'll be more hussies from now on.

Speaking of hussies... Rosaline in the Rocket is quite a handful too. And she has more to say there. Quite bossy too, so you can count yourself lucky that you are neither Walkingshaw (her ex) nor Leadenhall (her maybe-future).

I'd be okay with doing either BLUFF or SIR JO, whatever the BC's discretion.

Male, 20s, North American accent.
