The Master of Mysteries by Gelett Burgess (1886 - 1951).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-master-of-mysteries-by-gelett-burgess/
Subtitled, "Being an account of the problems solved by Astro, seer of secrets, and his love affair with Valeska Wynne, his assistant." Classic detective stories, with an atypical solver of them. Note, the book itself is published with no author name, which explains the introduction. Don't understand what I mean? Listen and find out! ( TriciaG)
Volunteers outside the USA: Gelett Burgess died in 1951. His work is still protected by copyright in places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years.
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
      .
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
      .
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
      .
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/masterofmysterie00burgrich
      .
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

May I read 1 and 16?

For 16, I see there is also math involved in addition to the Italian you warn about!

Thanks, Todd

Thanks!

I just paged through it again and didn't see math. :hmm: I do recall seeing one math equation in one story, but it was short. If I missed seeing it in this section, and you need help, holler. ;)

Not to worry. I made my living as an architect. The math will be much easier than the Italian!

Thanks! PL OK.

I don't think I'll ever try. It's not in my line.

I would have no idea how to begin! However, I suspect that his pet white lizard has something to do with it. :hmm:

I tried the first letter of every page, first letter of each chapter title, page numbers of each chapter. No success...

As I still have another section to read, maybe I will finally think of it.

Thanks, Todd

Hello! I'm new, this would be my first recording. Id like to do section 2, missing John Hudson. I could do more sections as well if you'd like!

Welcome! I'll put you in for section 2. But before you start recording it, please do the 1-minute test to make sure your computer settings and levels are all correct. This story will probably be about 40 minutes of finished recording. You wouldn't want to put in that much work, only to find there's some unfixable problem with the file and have to start all over again. Here's a link to the test instructions: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test

The other mystery to solve: How would you like to be credited in the catalog? There are places for a catalog name (some use a nickname or forum name, some their real name) and a link to a personal web site or blog, if you have one. I recommend using whatever name you say (if any) when you say, "recorded by [your name]" as that's how listeners will look for you. (Keep in mind that prospective employers, classmates, enemies, etc. can also find you using the catalog name, so be cautious if privacy might be an issue.) ;)

Done! Here's your catalog page: https://librivox.org/reader/13808 You can get to this page by using your linked name in any Magic Window you have a section assigned to you.

If you click on "Reader Section Details", you will see a list of what sections you've signed up for, and at what stage they are in.

Awesome! If anything problematic pops up, I won't hesitate to edit it or re-record it. I had a lot of fun reading it. The runtime is 31:58!

OK, here you go!

I could tell you had fun reading it. So good job with that!

Regarding the edits below: it's easiest to work from the back forward, so that any changes you make to the file won't affect the time stamps later in the file. Do the volume adjustment at the end, too, after any edits/re-records you make.

Volume needs to come up about 6 dB. You'll probably need to do compression to accomplish this.
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJ3lOTDsN6c

I recommend the following settings:
Threshold: -17 dB
Noise Floor: -40 dB
Ratio: 2.5:1
Attack: 0.2
Decay: 1.0
NO checks in the check boxes

After compression, amplify by 6 dB.

Bit rate is variable; needs to be 128 kbps constant. This is set when you export to MP3.

12:53 - "cutaway coat and striped trousers" - you say "stripped" as in, he didn't have trousers or they were torn into strips. It's supposed to be "striped" as in, with stripes. :)

14:53 - Repeated sentence/s: "One such coincidence... connection between the two men" repeated around 15:00

17:59 - Skip in the recording, "Valeska still stared"

21:37 - "a dim light appeared. The shape was drawn" - This is supposed to be "shade"

24:20 - "You are quite safe with us." The "us" is cut off, leading directly into the next sentence.

30:44 - "I'll buy a couple of tickets for ..." I don't understand the last word; it's got a skip in it.

Only about 2 seconds of silence at the end. It needs a total of 5.

Overall comment: I found your recording a bit rushed. You don't really take any time between characters speaking, change of scene/thought, etc. Pause a bit now and then, to give the listener time to process what's going on. ;) This is a common new-reader issue, and often improves with practice. For this recording, you could paste in some extra time along the way, listening as you go to hear where pauses would fit. OR you could leave the pacing as it is and just chalk it up to a first recording. That works OK for me, too. :)

Please submit the new file, using the same file name, and post it with the new file length. Thanks!
