The Inheritance by Susan Edmonstoune Ferrier (1782 - 1854).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project https://librivox.org/the-inheritance-by-susan-edmonstoune-ferrier/
"As the noblest attribute of man, family pride had been cherished time immemorial by the noble race of Rossville. Deep and incurable, therefore, was the wound inflicted on all its members by the marriage of the honorable Thomas St. Clair, the youngest son of the Earl of Rossville, with the humble Miss Sarah Black, a beautiful girl of obscure origin and no fortune." And so the stage is set for our plot, which focuses on the implications and complications of the return from France to Scotland of the Rossville widow and her daughter-heiress Gertrude, who must suffer the onslaught of relations and suitors as well as a mysterious, threatening stranger who plagues her mother. And while we suffer with Gertrude, who also may be in love with the wrong man, we enjoy a myriad of wonderful satiric portraits of the menagerie of minor characters in this lively story.

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

ok MW is ready to be filled in. I offered a suggestion for doing this, maybe Volume I. Chapter I and so on ? Since there are 3 volumes which start with Chapter 1 each time, it might be confusing else. :?

I also changed the intro/outro to "section" rather than chapter, for the same reason. Please see example and tell me if you're happy with this suggestion.

And the file names need 3 digits, because we have over 100 sections  I think we're in for a bit of time on this one. But I'm looking forward to the story.

As soon as you've seen this, I will move us over to Going Solo :) Here's to another fruitful collaboration. :birthday:

btw I found it extremely funny that the beginning is taken from Jane Austen "it is a truth universally acknowledged..." now who stole from whom ?

Thanks so much. I should have noticed some of those things, and I will try to be more vigilant in future with my set-ups. I like all your decisions; they are the better way to go in every case. Hope you will not regret being tied down so, especially as you say because we are in it for the long haul on this first one. But I too am already excited to get started. Jim   8-) :D

The chapters seem pretty short 8-) I love short sections. Might be easier to find them if we write the pages in the notes section (I gave you an example).

 ok you really mean it when you say you're eager to start  I will PL tomorrow though I think, it's a bit late today and I need to rest my eyes and ears a bit.

But it will be the first thing tomorrow probably. By then you'll probably have done chapter 2 already

Can you also put the time in the MW in the notes sections please ?

good night :)

all right, I listened to Chapter 1 and I must say, I already like the book. The author is a good writer and although it's written in an easy language, it is not trivial, but an engaging story. I guess the main plot will revolve around the growing-up and education of little Gertrude in the Highlands. I hope her uncle will not prove too much of a grumpy old nuisance.

I have a few small notes concerning some lengthy pauses you make. To me as listener they felt a tad too long for comfort, so maybe you could consider trimming them a tiny bit. I think 1.5 seconds is long enough.

> at 1:07-1:09 (p. 1): between “Tower of Babel” and “Even the dark”
> at 2:08-2:10 (p. 2): between “pride and ambition” and “The usual consequences”
> at 2:57-2:59 (p. 2): between “honourable profession” and “But Mr St Clair’s mind”
> at 4:27-4:29 (p. 3): between “his only portion” and “The natural wish”
> at 8:19: (p. 6): “readily transferred to it” – there is a hiccup or repeat of the word “it” here, that could be cut out

Otherwise, a great start into the book. Looking forward to the next chapter.
