Mrs. Warren's Profession by George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950).

This can be found in our catalog at https://librivox.org/mrs-warrens-profession-by-george-bernard-shaw-2/
.Mrs. Warren's Profession is a play written by George Bernard Shaw in 1893, and first performed in London in 1902 but was banned after two performances because of the profession talked about. The play is about a former prostitute, now a madam (brothel proprietor), who attempts to come to terms with her disapproving daughter. It illustrates Shaw's belief that the act of prostitution was not caused by moral failure but by economic necessity. It also has a lot to say about the hypocrisy of English society that profited from many despised and illegal professions and used people in despicable ways but pretended to look down on them. This was probably why it was banned, not because of the 'profession' of Mrs. Warren, but because it exposed very highly placed people doing nasty things to make money. - Summary by phil chenevert and Wikipedia

  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I had no doubt you would ferret this project out. Welcome. Haven't started yet but will do so later this week. And I said it was by Wilde, but it is by GB Shaw, another great Irish wit and mind. :D

Thanks. It was a shock to me the first time I tried recording an entire play that the flow from one character is picked up automatically by the listener. I assumed it would be jarring to hear the cast announced like that and then everyone read by the same voice; narration, young girls, women, old men, etc. But somehow it seems to work! Another miracle of the human brain I guess. go figure!

Hey, the entire play is now ready. Since plays are meant to be performed in one sitting I like to have all the acts ready so it can be understood more easily. Just one of my odd ideas. Image

Our 16 person family dinner was last night. I'm exhausted and this is a perfect way to spend the day. :D

Act 2 has the long intro. I wouldn't mention it except I just started act 3 and that one has the shortened version.

If you do change the intro on 2 please take a look at the ending silence. It could use a little clean up but if you leave the into then I would leave the ending silence as well.

Act 3 is PL OK.

Act 4
36:13 - I shouldn’t enjoy trotting about the park to advertize my dressmaker and carriage builder, or being bored at the opera to shew off a shopwindowful of diamonds.
It sounds as if during editing you may have cut off the word opera. I had to look it up to understand the sentence.

Thanks linny. I will fix the intro and ending silence of act II and the wording in IV and repost later today. Will also write a better summary.

Wow, 16 people at a sit down, that is a lot these days when people tend to just serve themselves and stand around munching at parties. Hope there was enough food to go around. :D Also hope the servants were well behaved.

lol, I was the servant, otherwise known as 'head elf'. I got out of the kitchen long enough to join everyone for dinner and then again to watch stockings being emptied. My time in the kitchen allowed my parents to enjoy more visiting time with everyone so today's sore legs are well worth it. :9:

I know what happened. Mistakenly uploaded my files from the working folder instead of the finished ones. ... duh.

OK, I think they are correct now. Thanks for being patient! :D
