The Railway Children by E. Nesbit (1858 - 1924) (version 3).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-railway-children-version-2-dramatic-reading-by-e-nesbit/
Roberta, Peter and Phyllis are suddenly yanked out of their comfortable lives and removed to live in the country with only their mother and to "play at being poor". Will they ever again be allowed to have bread with butter AND jam? Why does mother spend all day frantically writing in her room? And WHERE is their father?

The Railway Children is one of Edith Nesbit's best-loved books. It has been made into five films and a musical. The story of three children making friends with everyone around them and doing their best to do good and to be good (but not always succeeding) contains no magic, but the warmth of Nesbit's storytelling permeates the book. (Summary by Beth Thomas)
  • BC and DPL: Beth Thomas (Elizabby)
    Editor: Devorah Allen (mightyfelix)
    Narrator: Peter Yearsley (Peter Why)

Gender Neutral claiming except where marked in the MW as (M) or (F) next to the character.
    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Please read from the colour-coded scripts linked in purple in the Magic Window!
Source text (only for DPL): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1874
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'd like to read the narrator, if I may, Beth.

Editor checking in!

I may or may not read for this one. I'll let some other claims come in first, at least. I have a little more recording on my plate at the moment than I'm quite comfortable with.

Oh dear! I'm sorry for the confusion - I offered the role of narrator to you first, but when you said you were too busy I opened it up to other people. According to the rules, I'm supposed to have a narrator for my book before launching it - so that's the one role that is pre-cast!

Can I interest you in a character role instead? The "Old Gentleman" or "Father" might suit you, though both are small roles. If you wanted something bigger I've also got "Perks" the railway man. I'd rather have a female voice for "Peter", as he is supposed to be a young boy.

Beth,
I'm sorry that I caused a problem like this. I do remember saying that I'd exhausted my narration after reading The Amulet story, but I'm relaxed again now. Linny has kindly offered to let me narrate The Railway Children, instead of her doing it ... though I'm happy to go for the signalman if you'd prefer to stick to your promise to her. It's no worry either way.

David, I've changed the way I do the MW, so I won't be needing all those sections after 61 after all.
