Songs for the miliions, and other poems by Benjamin Stott (1830 - 1850).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/songs-for-the-millions_by-benjamin-stott/
Born in Manchester, and a bookbinder by trade, Benjamin Stott was an active trade unionist and member of the Chartist movement. Songs of the Millions, a suite of seventeen short poems in which Stott experimented with a variety of forms, was his best known work. Poverty and famine, injustice and the brutality of the police and their spies, solidarity and resistance are his themes. A devout militant Christian, Stott saved some of his most powerful words for the clergy who urged the working masses to wait patiently in poverty for their reward in the next world. The miscellaneous poems that complete this collection, include Stott's long ode to the Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity, which remains the largest fraternal organization of its kind in the United Kingdom. IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

MC: Annise, DPL: Newgatenovelist

This is off Google Books. I've used a shortened URL, because I can't work out how to get the URL without the search criteria in it.

Thanks, Anne! I've fixed the url by copying it from the google search results. I'm not sure how long shortened urls last!

These poems are great! Get the banners out and march!

PL notes for 01

The file name has song rather than songs. I think (and Anne, please correct me if I'm wrong!) that it's not a big deal so long as you're consistent with the other files.

The file name and the intro/outro have section 1. The MW has 0, and I believe the MW data and numbering are what gets written on to the final audiobook.

PL notes for 02

As above - the file name is consistent but not plural

As above - the file name and disclaimers says section 2, but it's numbered as 1 in the MW.

4.09-4.12, p. 6, second stanza, l. 2
Whose onward [heard outward] march brooks no delay;

8.21-8.27, p. 9, no. 4, second stanza, ll. 3-4
And the despot shall die, who impiously [heard imperiously] dares
To oppose the designs of thy people and thee.

16.27-16.31, p. 16, no. 8, l. 1, omission
Old England! They call [thee] the land of the free,

32.41-32.44, p. 30, second line on page, extra word
Affecting to scorn all the nations of [the] earth;

33.35-33.38, p. 30, last full stanza, l. 6, omission
And tell [to] the world how humanity grieves,

35.56-36.00, p. 32, second half of page
Men feel thy [heard their] power and own thy sway,

36.58-37.01, p. 33, second half of text, extra word
What food is he [who] would stop thy course,

Onward, comrade!

Reaming two files, ready for PL!

I won't be able to do corrections for a couple of weeks, so please take your time.

When I first read these poems, they seemed a bit kitsch, but listening to them again, they seem much better. I like the way he experimented with the different verse forms. He deserves to be better known!

I agree! One of the most exciting things about ferreting out authors to record, besides finding all of these unexpected experiments, is trying to boost awareness of their writing. At least, that's why I do this. In your case, though, I think at some point Manchester ought to give you the freedom of the city for services to culture!

Section 03 notes

Same as with the first two - the intro/outro and file name numbering starts at 1 and the MW numbering starts at 0

6.35-6.39, p. 42 XII penultimate line, extra word
For ne'er since [his] Time his onward course began

7.59-8.02, p. 43 XV
And sow the seeds of love o'er all [heard all o'er] the land;

18.23-18.28, top half p. 52, self-correction
Or freeing sweet chidle Or freeing sweet childhood from harsh controul,

18.39-18.41, mid-page p. 52
It is heard in the rush of the rapid river; [heard fire]

22.52-22.54, first line last stanza p. 56, extra word
Winter comes [at] last...

23.10-23.12, penultimate line final stanza p. 56, extra word
Gloomy and dull and short is [the] day,

27.15-27.18, first line penultimate stanza p. 60
Ye men of wealth, of [heard and] greatness, and of power,

32.22-32.25, top p. 65, omission
Came undefiled from [out] his Maker's hand,

33.42-33.49, low on p. 65 (two)
Soon as the glorious flag its wide [heard wild] unfurl'd,
The light of God shall then illume [heard illumine] the world;

Notes for section 04:

File numbering versus MW numbering

5.38-5.42, second line p. 73
Surpassing bright and glorious is the twinkling evening [heard even] star,

6.03-6.07, second half p. 73, omission
What varied feelings do they cause of pleasure and [of] pain.

11.04-11.05, first half p. 78
...which from [heard from which] God had its birth,

24.03, penultimate stanza p. 90, omission
[That fatal bowl,] that bane of life...

30.58-31.04, first line p. 99, two false starts
Which sparkle like gems on the grassy spears,

32.31-32.32, p. 100
And love to [heard to love] him...

outro - Songs for [heard of] the Millions

We'll reconvene next month, and until then, have a great trip!

Hi Phil,

It's my pleasure. These poems were a real find, and they do deserve a wider audience than they currently get buried in a single google scan.

Last notes - the intros are fine, but the outros need adjusting to match. I'm going to write it out because I guarantee I won't remember it when I come to spot PL again!

Preface: 'part 1' at end

Section 1: 'part 2' at end

Section 2: 'part 3' at end
Also: 6.36-6.39, p. 42 XII penultimate line
For ne'er since Time his onward course began [heard onward Time his course began]

Section 3: 'part 4' at end

Have I thoroughly confused you yet? It does feel like I'm trying!
